Areas outside NYC =< 45min commute to Brooklyn?
Hello all-
I currently live in Stamford and work in midtown. Long commute but it works for me. My s/o has a recent opportunity that requires a commute to Brooklyn. Stamford to Downtown Brooklyn is ~ 1hr 20 min.
We like Stamford, we live in a new building in the Harbor Point area. $2400 / month provides us a 1BD with ac, dishwasher, W/D in unit, gym, pool, 2x garaged in building parking spots, about 700-800 sq ft. Obviously we won't get this in NYC. However, we are open to living outside the city somewhere more commutable to Brooklyn.
Does anyone have any pointers on where we might find:
- <= $3k monthly rent
- 1BD apt with AC, washer/dryer, dishwasher. Sq ft is whatever, I know it will be smaller than current place.
- Maybe 1 parking spot??
- <= 45 min commute to downtown Brooklyn. <= 1 hr 10 min commute to midtown
I have lived in Stamford since mid 2020 and worked in Midtown for this time but given the recent world events, much of this time has been remote and I have not developed an in depth understanding of where I should look around NYC. I'm thinking there may be similar areas to Stamford that have had several recently build apartment complexes where one can find a relatively nice place in the $2500-$3000 range. As you can surmise, we place less value on proximity to nightlife/downtown and more value on a "nicer" apartment without spending obscene money.
Thanks in advance.
How important is area? You could get those boxes checked in parts of Queens or Brooklyn, not places I'd be walking around at 3am but easy commute to both of those work locations. Might need to wait a bit for the perfect unit to pop up, but there seems like there's some units on the market in that range.
Alternatively, a bit farther out towards Long Island is worth a look if the Brooklyn S/O doesn't mind driving to work. They are extending the LIRR to Grand Central by the end of this year so the midtown commute becomes a one-train ride from a good chunk of LI.
Ditto this. There are some decently lively/young communities in LI that are close to busy train lines that go to Brooklyn all the time (~40 min train rides). LI is also a great place to settle down/have kids too IMO OP - assuming that's a long term plan with your S/O.
The Brooklyn work opportunity is a shorter term opportunity that'll put her in a great spot down the road. (She is in medicine/healthcare, doubt there are many good opportunities for excel monkeys in Brooklyn) Longer term we see ourselves back to Fairfield county.
But yeah my assumptions regarding not finding something I could like for under $3k in Brooklyn seem to be incorrect, suppose that is good news.
