Becoming a dad as a banker

My wife and I are considering have a kid. I’m currently a middle market IB VP and would love to hear perspectives on how it was becoming a dad for folks. I feel like it’s hard enough making sure you spend enough time with your wife and adding kids is even more stressful? But most everyone has kids eventually

Balancing fatherhood with a career in investment banking is undoubtedly challenging, but it’s not impossible. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key insights:

  1. Time Management and Prioritization: Many senior finance professionals emphasize the importance of managing both the micro (day-to-day work) and macro (long-term goals). While the hours are demanding, having a clear structure and prioritizing family time can make a significant difference.

  2. Supportive Spouse: A recurring theme is the importance of having a supportive partner. Some professionals mention that navigating a 50-60 hour workweek with kids often requires teamwork, such as switching shifts for routines or hiring part-time help like a nanny.

  3. Sacrifices and Trade-offs: Raising a family while in banking often involves sacrifices. For example, you might miss some milestones or events due to work commitments. However, many bankers with families stress that knowing your priorities and making deliberate choices can help maintain a balance.

  4. Examples of Success: There are numerous examples of bankers who have successfully raised families. For instance, one MD shared that despite occasional travel and weekend work, they’ve maintained a strong marriage and are actively involved in their children’s lives. Another professional highlighted that many MDs and partners in their group are married with children, proving it’s achievable with the right mindset and support.

  5. Cultural and Group Dynamics: The culture of your group or firm can play a significant role. Some groups are more understanding and flexible, which can make balancing work and family life easier.

  6. Long-term Perspective: Some professionals suggest considering the long-term trajectory of your career. If the current workload feels unsustainable, exploring exit opportunities or transitioning to roles with more manageable hours might be worth considering.

Ultimately, while the journey may be demanding, many in the industry have shown that it’s possible to be a dedicated parent and a successful banker with careful planning and support.
