Best piece of classical you've ever heard?

I dont know about you guys but I occasionally like to listen to some classical, minimalist music to calm me.

The best one in recent times has been this (according to me anyway):

What do you have?

DisincentivyChopin's Marche Funèbre. The piece is so saddening, maddening, relieving, empowering and elegant.

the entire sonata is pretty excellent--the movement after where its basically ghosts sweeping through the graveyard is fantastic

I find it fascinating that his glory in the romantic era was because he did not glorify romance. All his work is much more complicated than his peers.

I may not be on the Jedi Council, but I sure am great with the Force. See my WSO blog posts

haha as a piano player it's almost impossible not to like his work...even the lackluster orchestration of his piano concertos are completely outdone by the piano part.

Argerich's live performance of Rachmaninov's 3rd piano concerto is also an all-time favorite

for those of u unfamiliar with the melodica, its essentially just a harmonica with a keyboard. wen played correctly, it can create some of the most relaxing music ive ever heard. perfect example:

You guys know classical music was all created in the classical period, from 1750-1830, right? So really, only coca cola and synthetic's pieces qualify. I like rachmaninoff though... lots more of a classical influence here than anything else.

Most people just lump all music from about 1600 to 1900 in the same category. 'Classical', like 'Wall Street', can refer to a specific period / location or just the general body of work. I sense you get this and are being snarky, so I am as well. Why? Well, why the hell not? It's good to see you posting again :D

My favorites right now: * Bach guitar suites, just beautiful * Handel. All of it. Amazing stuff * Final Fantasy IX soundtrack. I don't play the games, but the music is WOW GOOD

Ant, what music do you know that isnt emotional? I can only really think of one piece, and thats Reich's "clapping music."

There is music and then there is MUSIC. I enjoy modern music, but classical is much deeper. Wagner is amazing, as well as Beethoven, etc. Classical is like art, you appreciate it the more you understand about it.

Antonin Dvorak's 9th Symphony (also called the New World Symphony):

The second movement is absolutely beautiful... (Dvorak's a bit late to be "classical," but w/e...)
