Best UNDERrated Movies

There was another thread floating around about overrated movies, but everyone kept bring up underrated movies. So as we close the year and my netflix playlist grows I want to add some good movies that might have been overlooked by the critics or public.

E.G. Kung Fu Hustle. Great movie by Stephen Chow and highlights some great Hong Kong cinematography and plot with a hodge podge of humor and kung fu

If we're trying to find movies that didn't get much play or get good reviews, that are actually entertaining, I would go with Idiocracy.

Narrator: "The years passed, mankind became stupider at a frightening rate. Some had high hopes that genetic engineering would correct this trend in evolution, but sadly the greatest minds and resources were focused on conquering hair loss and prolonging erections."

Everyone needs to see that movie. Mike Judge hits the nail on the head with satire every time.

time is the coin of your life: be careful, lest others spend it for you - Carl Sagan

What is the man from earth about?

Also what is cloud atlas about.

The Man From Earth is about a man who claims to not age and claims to have walked the Earth for 14,000 years. The film is mostly dialogue, as his professor colleagues try to prove him wrong, and as he tries to convince them of his tale by describing his experiences from all of human history

Cloud Atlas is about characters from six different time periods, and how all of their lives are intertwined and interconnected. The different plot-lines range from an ocean voyage by ship in the 1800s to a tribe living in a post-apocalypse Hawaii hundreds of years in the future. The film switches back and forth between the different timelines, making the viewer wonder whether the characters have been reincarnated and showing how their actions ripple across time

glad you're here GC, you're the film buff.

I have very childish taste in movies, my shelf is pretty much james bond, mob movies, surf movies, and stupid stuff like american pie and fast times at ridgemont high.

I don't know if it was underrated, but Hero with jet li is pretty awesome, it's all in subtitles, but the imagery, symbolism, and drama are all very good. plus some sick martial arts scenes

"Going Concern"

The Fountain and Cloud Atlas. I thought both were brilliant but both got relatively mediocre reviews from critics

Also, The Man From Earth is one of my top favorites of all time, and that has almost no ratings since it essentially never made it to theaters

Really, Cloud Atlas? I've tried watching it several times, but it's SO BORING.

I was a big fan of Cloud Atlas, but my friends thought I was nuts.

"zanderman"

Lord of War
O' Brother Where Art Thou (well-regarded but even still underrated and under-discussed)

Lord of War got good reviews, no?

"jackstraw001"

Glengarry Glen Ross (stellar cast, must see for sales or real estate guys)
Ronin (De Niro, best car chases since Steve McQueen in Bullitt)
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Gary Oldman, based on John le Carre novel)
Get Him to the Greek (P Diddy - "I'm mind-fucking you right now")
Almost Famous (one of the greatest rock and roll soundtracks of all time)

All good movies, but none underrated.

I love Kubric and I think Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is severely "underrated". It has high ratings but very few people have actually seen it and if I show it to somebody they rarely get it FFS. I was completely blown when I discovered the movie. With a rather sophisticated sense of humor this really brings it home.

Two HBO movies are "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers" & Conspiracy.

Both have some of the best acting I've ever seen.

In the Peter Sellers, he is played by Geoffrey Rush who is an acting powerhouse.

Conspiracy is about the secret meeting of Nazis who try to hash out Germany's final solution. An excellent movie about a garish subject staring Kenneth Branaugh, Stanley Tucci, Colin Firth, Tom Hiddleston(briefly), et. al. This was a good 15 years before all but Branaugh were household names.

"lebron"

Collateral is probably my all-time favorite movie. Excellent visuals, love the soundtrack, and there are some incredible scenes in there.

25th Hour is also a very good movie.

Not underrated.

What Dreams May Come => Awesome visual effects (it won the Academy Award for Visual Effects) and starring Robin Williams and Cuba Gooding Jr.

Not underrated.

Jarhead Already said but Get Him to the Greek Resevoir Dogs (Underrated in the fact that it is overshadowed by all the other Tarantino flicks) Gangs of New York (Again, not a TRUE underrated film but overshadowed by other Scorsese films) Goon (if you're looking for some slapstick humor)

Not one of those is underrated.

@surferdude867" Resevoir Dogs and GONY aren't underrated in the traditional sense, as I stated.

Jarhead = 61% rotten tomatoes GHTTG = 6.4 IMDB Goon = 6.8 IMDB

Obviously, deeming whether something is underrated or not is a personal opinion. Personally, I would rate each of those films higher than their respective scores. Clearly, you feel that they are accurately represented in those scores. You are entitled to your own opinion, even if I do disagree with it.

"JT.Marlin"

Layer Cake
My first intro to Daniel Craig, if you like Guy Ritchie type movies its similar to Snatch, LSATSB, Rock n Rolla etc.

Great movie, mostly unknown but not underrated.

My Blue Heaven

Hilarious Steve Martin movie with Rick Moranis and great supporting cast. It is the only movie besides Toys where I actually like Joan Cusack. Steve Martin plays a wise guy who is put in the witness protection program and hilarity ensues.

I say underrated because it never gets mentioned in the same breath as Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and The Jerk,

"Ace Rothstein"

Mr. Nobody
Sunshine
Hard Candy
Friday Night Lights

I also think Casino is underrated, insofar as I view it as a cinematic masterpiece on the same approximate level as Goodfellas (although Goodfellas is slightly better).

Casino is not underrated. And Casino is better than Goodfellas.

"Master Bateman"

The Butterfly Effect (The first 45 mins is slow, but it's mind-bending until the end after that)
Munich
The Inside Man
The Ides of March
Sicario
Constantine
The Kingdom
Looper
John Wick

Constantine is the only movie in that bunch that is underrated.

Not a movie but Bloodline on Netflix is exceptional, especially season one. You must like character driven shows (its based on the inter-relationships and secrets of a complicated and well respected family in the Florida keys)

I'd watch it just for the performance of the dark-sheep brother Ben Mendelsohn alone, his performance is as good as any I've ever seen and I don't say that lightly.

The Drop- starts a bit slow but a really solid Tom Hardy movie- intense, as his movies tend to be.

Eastern Promises- Awesome movie about Russian Mafia. Not underrated but not necessarily well known.

Burn After Reading- Cohen brothers' dark comedy

Enemy- super mindbending Villeneuve movie- not everyone will like it. Took me multiple watches to fully digest, but i'm a fan. Really, I'm a fan of anything by Denis Villeneuve

Legend- thought this movie deserved better reviews.

Sicario- Another Villeneuve movie. Not underrated but if you haven't seen it you should, imo.

Anything by Nicholas Winding-Refn The visuals are stunning. The dialouge-less acting is fantastic. Drive and Only God Forgives are two examples of it.

If you're talking about films with a low score on Rotten Tomatoes (60%) that deserve to have a better reputation...

Chronicles of Riddick Natural Born Killers The Fall Speed Racer The Fountain Revolver
