How do you answer when your boss asks what direction you want to go within the origination? There are two clear and equal paths at my firm, trading or sales. I'm interested in the trading path but I'm concerned it may not be aligned with his views or come across as I don't care about the sales side. Do you monkeys have any advice? Also, no, this isn't him hinting that I should find a new job.

This is how you do it: Go into his office and say hey, i've thought about your question, which direction you want to go, and say all the way up. This should make him smirk, and then say look, I like sales and trading, buy I find trading more interesting to me because of X,Y, and Z. If your boss isn't a piece of shit, he'll let you do trading. Don't tell him I don't care about sales.
