Boston—Neighborhoods/Buildings
I go to school in Boston, accepted an offer and will be staying here for FT. My office is in the Financial District, so me and my roommate (also working in the Financial District) were looking at managed high-rises in the West End. Any suggestions on neighborhoods (is the West End good?) or specific buildings to live in (West End or anywhere else)? And are there good restaurants in the West End, that's pretty important to us.
West end sucks imo. Went out there last weekend and most of the bars are tired TD Garden trash cans (nothing wrong w that). If you're making good money then look at the seaport over west end all day. More young people hang out there / southie than they do in west end.
Roommate and I are going to be first-year analysts so we value proximity to the office. Seaport has bad public transit (from what I understand, Southie is the same) and I'd probably hate doing the Silver Line->Red Line->Orange Line every single day so I'd probably Uber which would destroy my wallet. Versus the West End where I can just walk two minutes, hop on the Orange Line, and be at work in 10min. I've been around Boston for four years and I'd say that nightlife here sucks, plus I don't really care for going out anyways (whenever I feel like it, I can always Uber to Southie). Given the fact that I care more about being close to the office and less about nightlife, does the West End make more sense for the two of us?
Most people walk to fidi from seaport. Its not that bad. I walk to seaport for lunch sometimes...
Agree with Brio, not sure I'd do west end. You can get good sq footage deals at buildings like Emerson in west end, but when you step outside your roomy apartment, you'll regret living there. Would definitely look at Seaport (even if it feels a bit "sterile" or not as homey as other neighborhoods in Boston) and tbh Boston is small, you could consider living somewhere on the near side of south end / back bay, it would only be like a 20 minute walk to work which isn't terrible.
I walk or bike from the south end / back bay area and like my commute a lot.
Personally I think that seaport feels a bit less sterile than it used to but prices are absurd/getting worse. Not a bad place to live for a couple years if you can swing it.

West end sucks. Go with Seaport or North End.
Problem with north end is that there isn't a ton of new product.
Ink Block (South End) has new buildings and has good food. Not as sterile as seaport. Transit isn't ideal but not too far from T/walkable to fidi on nice day
Kenmore/Fenway is the new Seaport. Take the Green Line.
As someone who has had to deal with the green line for all 4 years of college, sounds fair but I would rather avoid the green line...
I'd consider going for a walkup to get that quiet, neighborhoody feel that just can't be found in other cities.
Beacon Hill is a good option because you are close to everything. Ten minute walk or less from every T line, 15-20 minute walk from work (8-10 minute Uber), 15 minute walk from North Station and South Station (good for day trips on the Amtrak or commuter rails), 12 minute Uber to the airport, close to North End / Back Bay / east Cambridge... you get the idea. Another place others didn't mention is Brookline (close to the green line) but it's a bit further from the office. Only place I'd avoid is downtown crossing / Chinatown (not my favorite place to be at night).
Also agree with the posts above, just thought I'd provide a contrarian opinion. Feel free to PM - would love to meet more people in Boston haha.
