My guess is that whatever controversial stuff he did or was involved in, he's trying to avoid fingers being pointed at him by dumping it all to his successor or the interim person.
Barr’s letter was the most fawning ass-kissing word vomit I’ve read in a while. What a terrible “resignation letter”, although neither Trump’s tweet nor Barr’s letter mentions that he’s resigning. It just says his last day will be December 23rd. He was probably told “sign this or we’ll tell everyone you were fired.”
But why??? He must want something from Trump but what?

Trump’s been mulling firing Barr for the past few weeks, and then Barr abruptly leaves with neither him nor Trump using the word “resign” in their communications, and Barr’s farewell/resignation letter sounds like a MAGA campaign poster pumping Trump’s tires. I’m almost certain Barr was fired and agreed to sign the letter in exchange for some kind of favour from Trump (Barr’s been his political hatchet man since being appointed and might be fearful of retribution) or Barr saw how those who got kicked out of the administration have been continually dragged through the mud if they didn’t keep their tongues to Trump’s boot (e.g., Jeff Sessions).
It could be out of fear of retribution. What they hell are they afraid of? So many people in congress and other parts of the administration are just chicken shit.
I mean, it's obvious that Barr resigned in return for a favor. I thought it pretty obvious that that favor would be a pre-emptive pardon.

The man literally announced he wants to spend the holidays with his family and isn't continuing into the next administration. Considering the electors just chose Biden, this is quite literally the equivalent of giving your 2 weeks notice. You're getting excited over nothing, no one got thrown under the bus here.
