Buying a Pickup Truck...

Currently driving a 2019 Jetta but have this strong desire to buy a pickup....how crazy am I? I would use the bed on weekends but during the week it would purely be a commuter. I have a garage at work and at my apartment so parking won't be an issue. Looking at a new-used 2019 F150. Delta between trade-in and truck is 12k. Any experience would be appreciated.

Strongly recommend a Ram instead. Sell your Jetta independently; list on Cargurus OfferUp and Craigslist with great pictures.

As for the new truck, try to find a lease takeover as they can save you some money first and you’ll get a nicer truck. Then check Cargurus and Autotrader and filter by “Sale by Owner.” If you can’t find a truck you like that’s a private party sale, then hit the dealerships. Good luck!

Trucks are great:

- Hold their value insanely well (in sunbelt states especially). My first truck only depreciated ~$7K over first four years then I sold it (to get another truck). Some make/models do even better. Compare that to a luxury sedan where you drive off $10-15K in ONE year.

- Highly utilitarian if you need it e.g. lugging outdoor equipment, using the bed, towing. Haters will say you can do all of that with a crossover but nobody wants to do that

- New eco models get comparable gas mileage to big sedans so wont notice too big of a $ hit especially if you aren't gunning it at every light

- Chicks dig trucks

You’re looking for a new-used 2019 truck with basically 0 miles? It’s going to be very hard to find. Why don’t you just look at used trucks?

Don’t buy a Ram unless you buy a TRX, I would say buy a diesel, they cost more but hold more value through the years and run longer.

If you can afford it I would just go with a f250 or Sierra 2500. Bigger trucks to haul more a tow a boat. But depends on lifestyle.

Concur with the idea of passing on a RAM and instead looking at an F-series. Personally, I'm all over the GMC Sierras, but that's my own preference. If anything, a Toyota Taco is also a good choice (Tundras just aren't worth it).

Yeah agreed I like GMC and Toyota trucks.

Most pickups are stupid. "You live in the burbs, you have 2.3 kids and a wife that you hate and just don't want to be that minivan/SUV/station wagon dad--you might buy a bag of mulch twice a year and don't want to vacuum out the back after and you want to look MATCHO."

If that's you, don't do it.  Just be practical.  Honestly, station wagons are kinda counter-culture at this point.  Given that you live in an apartment, it doesn't sound like you'll be doing heavy house-work.  They make ski/bike racks for everything-Even Miatas (I own one)  You ain't rugged for having a truck.

That being said, if I wanted a truck and I had space, I would probably look for the cleanest manual Ford Ranger/Mazda B2000 I could buy.  Honest. simple. Hauls all the s*** you could possibly want.  Will last until the heat death of the universe or it turns to rust.  What more could you want? (Maybe A/C)

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.
