Can NYC reverse its decline? Is there hope?

Young people, especially white liberals, have no idea how bad NYC used to be and how bad things can get if the right policies are not implemented. Human nature is vile, and criminals are always looking for ways to assert themselves. NYC during the 70s and 80s was an urban nightmare that inspired movies such as "Death Wish." Then, Republican Rudy Giuliani was elected mayor in 1993 and began aggressive policing to punish even minor criminals before they progress to major violent ones. Combined with the 1994 crime bill, NYC's crime rate declined precipitously during the 90s, allowing Giuliani to win re-election in a landslide in 1997, including winning the Upper West Side (unheard of for a Republican). Bloomberg continued the work in the aftermath of 9/11. Their work allowed NYC to become safe and prosperous, attracting numerous yuppies and giving white liberals the freedom to enjoy urban life while pontificating about policing and identity politics.

Well, under socialist DeBlasio, things are pretty bad. It's certainly nowhere near the pre-Rudy years, but violent crime has ticked up in 2019. This year we have seen numerous anti-semitic attacks, killing of a Barnard female undergrad at a park, kidnappings in Brooklyn, numerous shootings, etc. This is not accidental. DeBlasio is anti-cop, preventing the cops from doing their jobs, all in the name of "racial and social justice."

Meanwhile, NYC's cost of living, outrageous rent due to liberal policies such as NIMBY regulations and rent control, quality of life, subway delays, infrastructure deterioration, continue to get worse. People are leaving the city, and just anecdotally, a lot of my classmates have left the city because they just can't handle it anymore. DeBlasio will be out of office come January 1, 2022. Can NYC reverse the damage? Can it recover the glory of the Giuliani-Bloomberg years? Or does the decline of finance and the rise of the far Left mean that NYC will continue on this sad downward trajectory?

Let's be real, "America's mayor" used the racial tensions of the day and the apathy the police department felt and won. The city is wonderful, absolutely the greatest city in the world imo but to think that DeBlasio is the cause of the bigoted attacks is ridiculous. Crime is born when opportunities are lost, it's something to see history repeat itself in terms of "anti-cop" rhetoric that Giuliani used and reading your thoughts. What will you do when rouge cops turn on you?

Rudy and Bloomberg made the city safe and prosperous. Yes, there were bad cops, but to say that those cops represent the NYPD or that a good chunk of the cops were on a racist rampage, is false. You are simply repeating the lies of the fraudulent Black Lives Matter and other race hucksters who cannot accept that tough policing works.

Did they?! Broken glass and stop and frisk have been proven wrong, but then again since we both know how to make the numbers work for us these studies cannot be trusted. I'm not using talking points of any kind, I do however have personal experience with rouge cop's being afraid of me because I'm 6' 235 with 10% body fat. Understanding history, moreover political history and knowing what was going on at that time it's only natural to use fear as a means to win. Is the city safer?! Absolutely but to blindly believe a self centered politician make the city safer is absurd. For your reading pleasure: https://phys.org/news/2019-05-evidence-broken-windows-theory-neighborho…

No, they will just move to the next successful society conservatives build and poison that one as well. See Texas.

Never discuss with idiots, first they drag you at their level, then they beat you with experience.

"neink" No, they will just move to the next successful society conservatives build and poison that one as well. See Texas.

White liberals are toxic, as they move out of states like CA/IL/NY/NJ and flock to GOP states, only to vote for the same failed policies that they left behind. The transformation of CO and VA from solid GOP to solid Dem and NC/GA/TX/AZ from solid red to verge of swing states, is the most disturbing political development of the past decade.

How do you account for the high rates of poverty in heavily GOP states like Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Louisiana? Mississippi has the highest poverty rate in the continental United States.

"Violent crime in New York began falling three years before Giuliani took office in 1994, U.S. Justice Department records show. Property crime began falling four years before. The decline accelerated during his administration, but the "turnaround" he claims credit for started before him.

New York was no anomaly, but was part of a trend that saw crime fall sharply nationwide in the 1990s, particularly in big cities. The city with the best record for reducing violent crime during this period? San Francisco.

Independent studies generally have failed to link the tactics of the Giuliani administration with the large decrease in crime rates.

Rather, many criminologists believe the decline in New York, as in Chicago, San Diego, Miami and elsewhere, was the result of a complex mix of social and demographic changes, including a break in the crack cocaine epidemic, an improving economy, and increased prison terms for proven lawbreakers.

Better policing tactics and policies were likely part of it, experts say, but not to the extent Giuliani claims."

I bet you want the return of racist and unconstitutional stop and frisk so police can be legally sanctioned to racially profile. Typical Brady post
