"Christmas Cancelled" - what to do?

With governments tightening Covid restrictions and flights getting cancelled, I was unable to fly home to spend the holidays with family. Everything closed, most of my friends left for the break, and I am now basically stuck in my flat alone. Never spent the holidays by myself so I am really bummed. I am trying to stay positive but kind of failing.

Any tips or suggestions on how to spend the holidays and next ~2 weeks by myselfwithout falling in despair?

FYI to those shitting - this is likely in reference to Nigel Farage’s tweet

Nah just weed and maybe some kiva.

I'd love to take a trip down south to Mexico to do some Ayahuasca or find one of those San Pedro/Peyote Shamans in Texas, New Mexico, or Arizona.

Ngl, weed has made me better at my work and at life. I'm more relaxed, more creative, and more empathetic. I also appreciate the world (and God) more than I used to. Can't even imagine what psychedelics would do for me.

I really hope you live in Colorado, Portland, or Portugal. otherwise, "legal drugs" sounds so fucking boring.

in all seriousness, I've never felt closer to my faith than when reflecting after psychedelic experiences, Milton's got it here folks

Start believing in conspiracy theories, you might as well be in one.

Never discuss with idiots, first they drag you at their level, then they beat you with experience.

As a guy who has spent countless holidays alone, I would focus on:

- staying fit (go for a run, body weight exercises, riding a bicycle, ..)

- mental sanity through your digital friends and family, call them, zoom them, etc

- we all have hobbies we never have time for; use this time to start a new hobby, learn a new skill or adjust your behavior towards diet/another routine

- find the real meaning of each holiday, if you want to believe in it

Two weeks pass quickly, you'll be back soon. so enjoy every single day.

Considering volunteering (if you’re comfortable). A lot of people could use your help, and I’m sure there are plenty of resources if you need navigation regarding this. Biggest issue is hours, but hopefully you get a few days off.

if I had 2 weeks alone and wasn't able to really leave my house for a 2 week period, I'd aim to accomplish some goals that I can do from anywhere, try something new, and also insert a little hedonism. I'm also assuming your work needs are diminishing

I'd go for a run/walk outside daily, rain, shine, snow or sleet. put in a podcast, playlist, book on tape, or just listen to ambient noise

I'd read every day, aiming to finish at least 2 books over this time period

I'd do yoga every day. I have a suspicion that WFH has us sitting down more than we even were before, and we need to be sure we're taking care of our bodies

I'd practice spanish every day, maybe setting up a call with someone on italki every 2-3 days to practice. I'd also finally begin my 3rd language

I'd practice music every single day, and aim to learn 2 or 3 new songs by the end of this period

I'd catch up on educational videos/ted talks/documentaries I've been wanting to watch but can't convince anyone else to watch with me

finally, I'd schedule an intense psychedelic experience, likely on day after Christmas. I'd meal prep the day before and plan out some options of stuff to do (movies, coloring, walking trail, etc.) and then just see where the journey takes me.

you can put your own spin on this, but I think you get the idea. a list like that will make the 2 weeks just whizz by, good luck.

Good post. It makes me feel guilty and lazy.

don't feel that way! what I posted was only if I didn't have work that had to get done. it's all about being intentional, I bet every single person, given the right amount of time to reflect, has all sorts of things they want to accomplish whether it's top of mind or not, and you're no different. anytime I am about to be in a difficult situation (like the OP describes where he'll be lonely) I try to distract myself with accomplishment or at least effort towards a goal. doesn't always go my way (sometimes I pick up a book and it's dogshit, sometimes I start a run and my ankle does something weird or I have to take a shit a quarter mile in, the phone rings consecutively during a yoga practice, my fingers get callused from too much voodoo child, etc.), but the effort is what counts.

Definitely communicate with your family, be it through phone calls, Zoom, Facetime, etc. Other than that, I would echo what Milton said above about embracing the religious aspect of the holiday, assuming you are a somewhat practicing Christian. Also, there's 5 NBA and 1 NFL game on Christmas, so if you're a sports fan that gives you something to do.

I’m a fun guy. Obviously I love the game of basketball. I mean there’s more questions you have to ask me in order for me to tell you about myself. I'm not just gonna give you a whole spill... I mean, I don't even know where you're sitting at
