Community service in NYC?

I was curious if anyone on this forum had a particular organization they worked with or volunteered with? Looking to get involved in NYC, but would like hear about any organizations that people are particularly passionate about.

I've worked on various builds on and off over the past 20 years with Habitat For Humanity, mostly in the Bronx - this has to probably be one of my all-time favorite ways to volunteer, you can visually see the progress of putting up drywall, sanding doorways, etc. and truly grasp the concept of helping to build a home for a family.

I used to volunteer at Ronald McDonald House, but it got emotionally difficult for me. I've also been a reading buddy for grades 4 through 6 at a school in Manhattan.

A friend volunteers with Coalition for the Homeless, helping kids in shelters with their homework and finds this immensely rewarding.

I don't know if they still do it on a yearly basis but Time Out magazine / www.timeout.com used to do a yearly listing of places to volunteer.

Funniest

If you work at a BB they offer great 2 hour photo ops for you to show up, get a free shirt and feel good about yourself for the year.

This. A great organization with little commitment needed. Honestly you can sign up for stuff the day or or day before if your schedule keeps changing and they do everything from food drives, to handing out coats, to kids stuff to planting trees and more. Can search by borough, date, activity etc.

Good Luck

I used to do Asia-Pacific PE (kind of like FoF). Now I do something else but happy to try and answer questions on that stuff.

Honestly, at this point in the game, I don't volunteer to make myself feel good anymore. I volunteer to see from the inside which organizations are worth donating to. As most of us are or will become people of means, our job is more suited to paying lunch for 500 kids rather than dropping a sloppy joe on a lunch tray.

I volunteer at East Harlem Tutorial program, really great org that tutors students in subjects they are having a hard time in and helps with their SAT prep. Most kids are 1st gen college, don't have parent support in their HS studies, etc... Also, nyphil. Have played the violin since I was 4 (not a req, but most people have serious ties to classical music). Selling merch or helping with people getting to their seats, stuff like that. It's really fun if you like classical.
