Damar Hamlin, Buffalo Bills -- Thoughts and Prayers

First time I can remember since 9/11 or World Cup or Boston Bombing where all of us are united in our common humanity.

Much love and respect to that brother for any of us who have played sports growing up.

Puts our petty bullshit in perspective.

Commotio cordis (Latin, "agitation of the heart") is an often lethal disruption of heart rhythm that occurs as a result of a blow to the area directly over the heart (the precordial region) at a critical time during the cycle of a heart beat, producing what is termed an R-on-T phenomenon that leads to the condition. It is a form of ventricular fibrillation (V-Fib), not mechanical damage to the heart muscle or surrounding organs, and not the result of heart disease. The survival rate is 58%, which is an increase in comparison to years 1993–2012, where only 34% of victims survived. This increase is likely caused by prompt CPR, access to defibrillation and higher public awareness of this condition.1

Posting the definition for Commotio cordis from Wikipedia doesn’t ensure the fact that the incident was actually Commotio cordis, but Ok.

We will never know what actually happened because they will Lie like they are Lying about everything else.

Nothing, really. I hope he is Ok. Big Steelers fan here, and Damar went to Pitt. Also a genuine fan of football and he's had a great year. I mean no malice by my comments. I do think it's strange however people are so fast to believe doctors on the internet who weren't there to analyze the situation claiming it was Cc. I didn't say it had anything to do with the V, but I see below you dismissed this theory entirely. Not sure why. It is concerning to me though, seeing so many young, healthy individuals having cardiac and neural issues. Easily may have been Cc, and from the internet, it really looks like it might've been and probably was, but I want you to understand my 'anti-vaccine conspiracy bullshit' stems from me questioning 'science' from the start of the pandemic, and the fact there's no way of really knowing what prognosis was in truth.

Much love to you from a long-time lurker of this site. I always enjoy your posts and comments.

So your argument against believing the medical community is because "they weren't there" but your argument for believing it is a side effect of the vaccine is... you want that to be true because you have some weird axe to grind?  Do you think every diagnosis of a heart attack is bullshit, because it's incredibly rare that the doctor "was there"?  And mind you, I can almost guarantee there was a medical professional who got to Mr Hamlin within seconds of his attack

People like you are why the world is going to hell in a handbasket.  You aren't questioning "science" you're just a dope who wants to feel self-important.  Are you also a flat earther?  Do you believe in chemtrails?  Putting "science" in scare quotes doesn't make your opinion valid, it just makes you an idiot.  Are you afraid to take any other vaccine?  Probably not.

I always find it amazing that conspiracy theorists think that the medical community (in this case) which is made up of hundreds of thousands if not millions of people in a plethora of roles, have somehow all come together to create this massive conspiracy to push an unsafe vaccine on the public while hiding all tangible evidence of said cabal but are also so incompetent than some keyboard warrior in their mom's basement like w99 is capable of unraveling it in a matter of days.  It takes a combination of almost unimaginable arrogance and a correlated degree of stupidity that would impressive in other circumstances.

Well, while I don't necessarily agree with your take I do know that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I don't think belittling you will do any of us any favors. I am also glad you've found my comments helpful over the years - nice to know that I can help out some folks.

That being said, it's perfectly normal to 'question' the efficacy of the vaccine. We should technically question almost everything - in the world we live in, malice exists everywhere and I think that while keeping a healthy sense of optimism is key, it's perfectly natural to be initially skeptical of new things. However, we're more than two years since the beginning of the pandemic, and we now know that it's over. What have we learned?

I believe a middle ground exists. I believe that masks were largely beneficial in the beginning, and the vaccine lowers the death rate and severity of the virus. I also believe that needless lockdowns are extremely harmful and overzealous (especially at this point), and fear-mongering did humanity way more harm than good. I just want to point out that the REASON the pandemic is over and no longer a large factor in our day-to-day lives is due to the vaccine. I guess you COULD make the argument that we don't know the long-term effects of the said vaccine, but it sure as hell looks like it's doing the job! I choose to trust the government agencies that invested billions of dollars into R&D, the countless scientists at groups like Pfizer, Merck, and BioNTech who have spent dozens of years in this field, and the firsthand experience of getting COVID pre-vaccine and post.

Beyond that, I really just don't see the point anti-vaxxers have. I'm not insinuating this is directly you, but it largely seems to me like they have no actual basis for what they say. I'll pose the question: what do people stand to gain from vaccines, besides money? Yeah, if a private company develops a drug and sells it at a massive rate, people make money. But, people make FAR more money by retaining customers, and that will only happen if the thing actually WORKS. I've just never seen the net benefit of producing something that fixes one problem and breaks a lot of others - also keep in mind that the drug testing process both in the United States and the greater EU is ridiculously stringent. The number of clinical trials, oversight, regulatory governance, and testing needed are so tightly-run that I just have a hard time believing that an agency with as much nonpartisan power as the FDA or CDC would let something like that slip by. Even if they did, they employee so many damn people that you don't think one of them would speak up? It's the same thing as claiming George Bush did 9/11 - an operation of that size is just too large to keep quiet for so long.

I hope this clears up the point I'm trying to make. I believe the vaccine is beneficial and that everyone should get it. However, we live in a free country, and FORCING people to take a jab shouldn't be the answer. I've provided my train of thought, I'm confident in the results, and I just encourage everyone to take a non-political approach in cases like these. We should aim to stop having medical treatment be affiliated with a (D) or an (R), as that just helps no one.

The thumbnail had me thinking this was gonna be straight anti-vaccine conspiracy bullshit. Glad I was proven wrong. Great video - Mike Hansen is also a Sports Med MD who produced a great video, I'll link it below if you want to check it out.

Shocking and sad news - from an NYG fan, we stand with Buffalo. Tossed a few bucks to his charity, least I can do at this point. Really enjoyed how a lot of Cincinnati was lit up in blue in support, it's great to see us come together on this one. Pull through, Damar! We're with you!

I hope he pulls through it.  I do not know anything about the situation but more often than not, when the person is young, he or she has some type of condition that leads to a collapse.  Sometimes it is known and sometimes it is not known.  When  I worked at a large BD a long time ago, a very physically fit guy collapsed while running.  He survived but he had an unknown condition related to his heart that led to the issue.

Since December 6th

Football

- Damar Hamlin, 24, Bills, HEART ATTACK

- Uche Nwaneri, 38, Jaguars, HEART ATTACK

- Jake Hescock, 25, UCF Knights, CARDIAC ARREST

- Demetrious Johnson, Lions, AORTIC DISSECTION

- Coach Mike Leach, HEART ATTACK

- Franco Harris, Steelers, SUDDEN DEATH

Not to mention JJ Watt retiring because he had to be resuscitated and discovered he has arrhythmia. Probably nothing to see.

OK, and we have evidence that you have the reading comprehension of a five year old, as evidenced your laughable posts above where you so badly misinterpreted all those COVID studies.  And you haven't been vaccinated.

Which means that not getting a vaccine leads to having substandard intelligence.  That was about the level of causality you proved in the list above, right?  So we can accept both of those things as true?

Franco Harris was 72!!  The average lifespan for an American man is 77.  The guy played one of the most physically punishing sports in the world, at a time when there was no thought to player safety, and you think he died in his 70s because he took a vaccine?  Lol.
