Dealing with gossip/ hate

Wondering how you guys deal with others gossiping about you, this is something that is unavoidable especially in this industry. How do you block out all these thoughts and the anxiety that comes with it so you can better focus on work?

So the reality is everyone rants & gossips about one another: juniors rant about MDs, MDs talk trash about clients, VPs shit on their Analysts, etc.

I think this is just a byproduct of our industry: people work long hours and are stressed. When you’re stressed, one of the outlets to let off some steam is to rant/gossip. Who do you rant/gossip to? Well you are in the office most of the week, so you rant to your coworkers.

One thing I used to do on the sellside was to think “one day I’ll be rich/famous/powerful and I’ll crush you buffoons who have wronged me”. It gave me extra motivation (ie anger) that fuelled me throughout the year. And in a way that worked: one of my former VP (now a MD) who I really hated always pings me to pitch stuff. I’ve ghosted him for about 1.5 years now and his firm’s RM (relationship manager) is pressuring him on why our shops can’t connect. I’ll admit that I do get some satisfaction from this.

Everyone doesn’t gossip. To gossip is a sin. It falls under the 10 Commandments under Thou Shall Not Kill. You shall not kill another’s reputation. If you want to say something about them, say it to their face.

"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." - Bruce Lee

Wow so you really went from the underappreciated junior employee to the coveted buy-side client, congrats on making that happen. Most people have the same thought process of 'one day you'll be begging me for business', but few actually make that a reality. That must be very satisfying. It should also indicate to other seniors on the sell side that there are repercussions for treating your juniors like dirt. I remember all of the terrible seniors I worked for on the sell side, its something you never forget.

I'd suggest not to open up a lot to your colleagues just maintain professionalism this includes not dating someone from the office (Do not HOOKUP where you VLOOKUP) and you will be fine. Also, avoid gossiping about others or participating in gossip

If you know lots of people, there is going to be someone who talks trash about you.  The only thing that really matters is what you think about you. If you think highly of yourself, what other people think of you matters less.
