Do you have a lawyer

Someone I kinda know got fucked and ended up spending a night in jail despite not having had done anything wrong himself. Idk all the details, but some people he was with were in possession of drugs. He was released the next day but seemed super rattled by the whole incident and having to deal with a shitty public defender.

I guess that begs the question, do any of you have a lawyer on retainer? How much would that even cost in NYC?

Unless you’re in a position where you need a lawyer regularly, there’s no reason to have one on retainer. If you end up needing one, spend some money and hire a good one, but it’ll be way cheaper than keeping a comparable attorney on retainer.

Public defenders are for people who can’t afford private attorneys, and there’s pretty much zero overlap between that group and people who could afford to have one on retainer

Do you think we all have a picture of Roy Cohn inside our desks? That we keep him on retainer to ward off real estate lawsuits and “fix” things?

This is basically a site for college students to learn about the Finance industry and for the investment bankers and other professionals who stay on. Investment bankers are extremely staid people who aren’t really trying to break laws or do anything tricky. Of course, we know a guy, but he mostly does tax or M&A at a Vault 100 kind of place.
TLDR: finance professionals (IB, PE, etc.) would have the ability to retain the best white collar or criminal defense attorneys if they really needed it, but it’s not like anyone’s on speed dial

That's not how that works.

Giving a lawyer a retainer doesn't cost you any additional funds until you need the lawyer and then the retainer starts to burn. But I think its a rather prudent idea to keep a retainer with someone just to "keep them interested" and have them take my call at 3AM. I'd rather do that upfront than have to pick a lawyer under a time constraint.

For me, I have a friend who is a lawyer and judge in town. We have an agreement that I can call them for an emergency need to get me out of a pinch and then they would refer me out from there to someone I can use long term.

I have a friend who keeps pitching me LegalShield.

Anyways, no one should need a criminal lawyer on retainer.  Have a go to lawyer in case you get a DUI or something, but no need to get one on retainer.

Your friend got out probably on i-bond and having a lawyer or a public defender at that stage of the game is irrelevant. You bond out and then hire a criminal attorney. I've never kept one on retainer but I've used a few good criminal defense attorneys. Would use my last one again for sure but I'm pretty sure I'm done getting arrested.
