EDM Music is for People Dead on the Inside

Art is the reflection of ones soul and music gives great insight into people. EDM is for people dead on the inside and just need noise as they can't be left to their thoughts. People who enjoy folk and Americana music are on the other end of the spectrum.

My favourite band from that era is Huey Lewis and The News.

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

In '87, Huey released Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

Agree that this is a viewpoint from those who don't actually remember the 70s and 80s.  What the kids on here don't understand is that they're listening to the good 70s and 80s music which survives today.  But during those decades, there was also a TON of crap that was very mainstream. Take disco for example which was huge in the 70s. Anyone listening to their old disco albums and loving it lately?

80s also had a ton of synth pop which was fucking terrible outside a couple of good bands surving today like Depeche Mode and New Order. Same goes for hair metal. Yes, Motley Crue is awesome but for every Crue, there were a 100 complete piece of shit hair bands that dominated the airwaves. Let's not even go into 80s rap which is practically unlistenable today.

I've been seeing a trend of the shittiest takes lately (Drumpfy aside) coming from anons in Commercial RE. What gives?

I am an EDM enthusiast and I kind of agree. I like the fact that is it melodic yet structured so it helps me to relax and put my brain on autopilot. I've got enough going on in my head by nature, so listening to deep soul searching songs would overdose my brain with emotions.

If this is true, then EDM music should be a real hit on WSO. All jokes aside, it’s really one of the only genres of music that’s truly pushing the boundaries of sound design. Just like the transition from anything analog to high tech, there will be laggards trying to hold onto their precious traditional values but over time you can’t ignore this change. Same thing happens with business, art, movies, tech, etc.

Who are you to declare that one’s interest in art is invalid? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of art? If I duct tape a banana to the wall, that’s art bro and imma sell it for $240K. Deal with it.

This guy has been to an EDM show. No concert experience compares. Sure there are plenty of opportunities to see better artists, but in terms of raw, animalistic, concert experiences, I have seen so much shit at EDM shows that I wouldnt have seen elsewhere.

This is coming from a dude who frequently sees Dead & Co. and similar artists. There is room to love and appreciate all genres of music.

if youre looking to hook up with women, EDM is the clear winner (only counter arguement may be Seal, lol).

Yeah I’ve been to Electric Zoo in NYC - it was epic.

There's a lot to like about EDM that you might be missing out on. Electronic music places a huge emphasis on music dynamics like drops and tempo changes. No music is just 'noise' if it's a logical musical concept, anyway. Hyper-pop could be more easily accused of being noise. Still enjoyable, though, because it only intentionally breaks certain 'rules.' Additionally black metal could seem like noise, but the chord progression is specifically crafted to prevent musical resolution and keep the evil tone of the piece. You'll hear the guitars move from tremolo picked power chords up to a triad or diminished chord and back down, or run broken arpeggiations of similarly dark chords. In EDM, metal, pop, etc. it's all intentional. Folk and Americana musicians answer the same musical questions when they write. Different answers and audiences of course.

I am dead inside, though. Cheers

I saw them in concert - in NYC

The intro to this song sounds like Nine Inch Nails Closer

Porter Robinson. New music is so different from how he used to be but listen to Wind Tempos and Blossom from his new album and you'll feel something

I've seen him like 5 times, including Virtual Self which was absolutely insane.
