Have you ever run a background check on yourself?
I ran one on myself recently for like $30 just to see what companies would see and it was shocking. Lots of stuff on there I thought was erased, expunged, or gone. Every LLC I have created is on there. Overall though a clean criminal record, but surprised the actual charges are showing up on the background check. No misdemeanors no felonies which is the important part.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key points about background checks and what they might reveal:

Yeah WTF MonkeyBot I was so surprised. It's not fair if you're not convicted that these details still show up. I paid an extra $1000 to my lawyer to get certain charges expunged, but learned that they were only expunged for that state and when other states pull a background check the charges show up. Such BS.
What service did you use? Now I'm curious...

Heard this story about an analyst who was staffed on a defense deal that required some particularly rigorous screening. His FBI background check came back clean, but he couldn't be on the deal because they called his college and found out he had an underage drinking violation with the university - not the police or anything, just the school.
Yeah DoD security clearances are no joke. I used to have a secret clearance when I was a teenager, but years later was asked to get cleared and turned the request down. Then last year I was asked to get a secret or top secret clearance with a PE company in the DoD industry and I looked up the form I had to fill out and declined.
The main reason I declined is that you have to be emotionally stable to get a DoD clearance and I would have had to list all the times I had been in rehab and the fact that I have a bipolar diagnosis and didn't want my employer to know all of that. I was selected personally by the MD and COO to get cleared for this role and it came with a pay jump and increased benefits package, but people just don't treat me the same when they find out I have a bipolar diagnosis, even though I haven't had any issues with it for 11 years. I fear the stigma. Even my siblings don't really understand it. I'm fine if I just get my sleep and take proper meds.
I probably would have eventually gotten approved for a DoD clearance, but my employer would have been like WTF after I listed all of my past. And lying on the SF 86 form is a felony.
That sucks for your friend. Sounds like a pretty rigorous investigation.
How can anyone who has spent more than 3 years in finance qualify for this then
is this something that a lot / nearly all people had to get during your role, or just you/ a handful?
Yes, after I was arrested for a felony. Nothing came up.
Did you get convicted for the felony? Have a friend who might be getting a conviction for a misdemeanor as is scared if the charges will show up in a Private Equity background check. Do these background checks also show criminal records? He won't be able to expunge the conviction until his probation is over. 1-3 years. Appreciate any advice!
what were you accused of that showed up on this online bg check?
I literally thought all of this was erased from my record as I have no criminal convictions, but this is what came up on the report:
Open Container - dismissed
DUI - traffic violation, no criminal charges
Obstruction - did not pursue
Trespassing - dismissed
No Driver's license in possession - traffic violation
I have apparently lived a very boring life. All that might show up on a background check would be my FINRA regulatory violation that was due to my BD making a careless mistake.
