How Did Y’all Find Roommates

I’m moving to a new city in Texas for my ft role post grad. As much as I love my privacy and could definitely afford a really nice 1 br, I know no one in this city and need roommates to get my bearings. Craigslist doesn’t seem to be a good resource these days so wondering how ygs went about finding people to live with.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some strategies for finding roommates when moving to a new city:

  1. Networking with Fellow Interns or Colleagues:

    • Reach out to fellow incoming analysts or associates at your firm. This can be done via LinkedIn or through your school network. Starting a dialogue early can help you find like-minded individuals who are also looking for roommates.
  2. WSO Roommate Threads:

    • Participate in WSO roommate threads. For example, there are threads like the "2019 FT Roommate Thread" and "2021 FT Roommate Thread" where users share their details and preferences to find potential roommates.
  3. Preferred Neighborhoods:

    • Specify your preferred neighborhoods and budget. For instance, in Houston, downtown/midtown areas are popular due to their walking convenience.
  4. Timing:

    • Start your search early. For summer internships, begin looking in late March or early April and aim to commit to a place by May.
  5. Online Platforms:

    • While Craigslist may not be as reliable, consider other platforms like Facebook housing groups, Reddit, or specialized roommate-finding apps.
  6. Personal Information Sharing:

    • When posting or responding to roommate ads, include basic information such as your start date, position, budget, and any preferences regarding the number of roommates or gender.

By following these strategies, you can increase your chances of finding suitable roommates and making your transition to a new city smoother.
