How do you assert your personal boundaries at work?
eg dealing with inappropriate or irrelevant personal questions but also political views/other contentious issues etc

Keep quiet, smile or nod when people bring stuff up. If people push you just say you don't like to talk about personal stuff at work very neutrally and leave it there. Better to just be silent than be aggressive if you don't want to talk about this stuff, people will get the message and stop asking sooner or later
Politics in particular should stay out of most work environments. Again, "oh I don't like to talk politics" is enough.
I find it incredible that some people can walk around and just assume that others agree with their viewpoints:
"Can you believe xyz did this!?!" or "How crazy is it that xyz party is going through with this!!"
Best response is just a short chuckle with a "yea, crazy" then get back to your work.
That’s been the case recently if you’re on the left, at least in most white collar working environments. I’m sure in the 80s, 90s and 2000s it was the opposite though and conservative / business friendly.
I think people not assessing upside/ downside. It is crazy to me how little people think about that in general. Like you stated- upside.. virtually none. Downside, you alienate your coworkers.

Opposite actually... I just think 50% of people will disagree with you, it's divisive, and generally not appropriate discourse for a finance workplace
100% agree, only caveat I'll issue is I'll sometimes joke around/be sarcastic/redirect
"nah I didn't see that about the Jan 6th committee, but how about them O's? hottest team in baseball and only a couple back from a wildcard spot!"
"I don't think abortion is really appropriate for the workplace, but it does put a damper in the launching of my dead baby joke book"

in all seriousness, I just don't get into it with people, zero upside
My practice is when it comes to hot topics like that I just make a sound as in acknowledging what is being said without adding to the conversation. Sadly, some people remember opinions which could affect you in the future.
Know when to share, how much to share, nod and know when to completely ignore.
