If You Could Go Back
I see so many of these on Reddit / Quora and thought it would be helpful to see one catered to the Finance industry.
If you could go back to when you were a fresh graduate, what would you do differently or wish you knew? This could include career, relationships, grad school, life experience, etc.
shoulda coulda woulda is a loser's conversation. the time you spend in saying I wish I would've done XYZ is time you could be using to better yourself today. if, however, you use it as an opp to assess your weaknesses, fine. there's a subtle difference though, don't daydream about days gone by unless it's reminiscing with friends/family.
wish you would've changed majors? start taking courses on coursera, khan academy, or using opencourseware from yale/mit others
wish you would've exercised more? exercise NOW
wish you would've spent more time with family? call your mom NOW
wish you would've saved more money? cut expenses and set up a savings plan NOW
wish you would've traveled more? book a plane ticket NOW
I'm a big believer that many mental health issues that weren't due to trauma from another person/exogenous event are due to too much focus on the future (anxiety) and too much focus on the past (depression). the more you focus on the present and on doing the right things, the less of a raincloud you'll feel hovering overhead
good luck bro
I am a recent grad and wanted to hear advice from others that have years of experience/ perspective.
ah, so you're looking for what you should do now?! great question! here's some of my longer form life advice from over the years. happy to help further if desired

godspeed
as the young kids say these days, "based"
this is... probably the most helpful thing I've ever read on wso
Love this reply. Focus on the NOW. No excuses!
Been in sales my whole life. If things weren't so good and I was visiting with my mom (for real), she'd always make excuses - well the market or the weather or your health or....I used to end those chats with, "Mom that's nice, but nobody cares. My boss doesn't care, the clients don't care, my mortgage company certainly doesn't care."
Just figure out what you want to do going forward and full steam ahead. Everything you've done to date is just R&D for what you'll do next. Go for it!
I wish I would've gone into a more demanding / more potential position out of college. Had the grades/background to get into IB but avoided it because I didn't want to spend the final young years of my life in the office. Now that I'm 31-32, I still feel young as hell and in hindsight it was stupid to think 23 - 25 were my last young years. If I could go back, I'd have supercharged my career/savings and did the 80+ hour weeks in my early/mid 20s and enjoyed the back end of my 20s/early 30s. My 23 - 25 years were probably more interesting than most people, and even still I didn't really do anything so cool that it was worth it
Probably to forget taking the CFA exams and focus on a good GMAT + M7 MBA in my 20s.
I know the average age of MBA admits is like 27-29, but do you think they're really agist if you're 30+? I'm contemplating grad school + MBA dual agree and will be on the other side of 30. I really hope that isn't held against me.
He’s just saying the CFA isn’t that helpful in terms of what to spend your time on, you’ll be fine
