IG Flex

is Instagram a bad contribution to the world? Is it just me or does it perpetuate FOMO and a flex culture? in some ways it really connects people, keeps old friends in your thoughts and allows the mind to wander. what are all of your thoughts?

Its shifted to a flex / fomo / sexualized culture. Everything I see on IG is sex. A lot of my friends who are girls from HS / College are posting ass pics, booty bikini picts etc...

In the early days of IG it was about connections and photos and now its just exactly what you menitoed above. SB

But don't you want to see that? They are getting views b/c they want to be more popular than others and claim they have more folowers...

Will update my computer soon and leave Incognito so I will disappear forever. How did I achieve Neanderthal by trolling? Some people are after me so need to close account for safety.

Yeah I think this is somewhat lame. I am attracted to a lot of different hot girls on Insta so I mainly base that feed around hot chicks. The only guys I follow are close friends or professional athletes. But, its mainly hot chicks.

As far as the hot chicks go - many have a certain pose or body part that they like to highlight over and over again in different outfits. Its less about exploring the world for them and more about catering to the masses that have some sort of ass fetish or something and just continually comment and clap for this 'ass excellence,' when a lot of them to me are just average hot but not super hot. I remove all chicks from my feed that do any odd photoshop because that is just whack to look at.

How do you not get excited everytime you are scrolling through IG while out and about? I'd be distracted all day......

Also, how weird is it to be seeing hot asses and then to see some professional male athlete's body. Kind of confusing, no?

great read here, thanks for sharing. that was a few years ago and it feels like it has even accelerated in the last two years. it may be because my peer group has gotten older and is more insecure about being in the real world idrk.

Exactly proving my point. June 1 I delete dthe app and I'm going on a 30 day cleanse (among other things like alcohol, masturbation and every other vice I cater to). Hopefully I come out a changed person or atleast feel better about myself / actions. We'll wait and see.

Got rid of mine a few years ago. You're completely right it's a culture of people who thrive only off of flexing on other and seeking validation for how sick their "experience" was (i put this in quotes because a lot of people go do shit for the IG). It's a sad way to live

It’s terrible. I’ve taken a hiatus from mine and already feel happier. think it was planting fomo / uncertainty in my head especially with everything going on around ya right now

IG is bad in the same way the internet is bad in the same TV or twitter is bad. These tools were meant/can be used to increase your knowledge but are used by others as a means to showcase or contribute nothing to society.

It does perpetuate FOMO and people flexing, but then creates a culture of everyone trying to one up one another. I always wonder how many people would actually go on trips/place or do things if they couldn't post it. I think the stat is 1 out 6 IG users wouldn't wear an article of clothing again if it appeared on IG. (Anyone remember when lil bow wow posted a pic of his "private" jet that turned out to be a picture of a magazine ad? Apparently now you can't just wish your friend happy birthday, or post one pic, it has to be slide show of how good of friends you are. )

As they say, IG is basically everyones highlight reel. I know plenty of people in bad relationships who love posting about how much they love each other or people without savings or two dollars to rub together posting pics of $15 coffee.

Probably one of my biggest pet peeves are "staged" IG pics, people trying to make something look candid but its set up. Really it all comes down to herd mentality. Bc Kelly posted its been 15 weeks since they got married, or its their 12 anniversary of the first itme they went on a date to the movies, everyone else feels they need to do it.

social media is what you make of it. i know people who use it for inspiring travel pictures, how to design their current car project (colors, rims, mods, .) and others use it to look at soft core. IG is a mirror of society, not a different world. If you follow a hot girl on IG and enjoy looking at her, chances are you would do the same IRL even if IG or the internet wouldn't exist.

Likewise, you can use social media to improve your own life, set different goals or simply work on yourself (look, weight, workout, objects to buy, ..) or let it get the better of you and suffer anxiety or other syndromes because you feel inadequate.

The people who post on insta often are likely doing so because they want attention, because they aren't receiving validation elsewhere. If you're killing it in your career, the gym, and socially you don't need instagram to tell you who to worship, what to buy, or what to wear. Personally, I noticed that as soon as I started actively improving my life outside of social media that my desire to spend time looking at it diminished significantly.

It is not to say that there aren't legitimate uses for social media, because there are, but it can also be a trap. Social media is what you make of it.

I archive my photos on a VSCO account where I don't worry have to worry about followers/likes and I don't follow anyone.

In terms of connecting with people, I believe I have improved a lot as a communicator; I have more genuine conversations with people IRL because I don't already know what is going on in their lives. I keep a smaller circle of friends now, which does suck sometimes because I miss keeping up with people I used to be close to, but the mental freedom of not wasting time thinking about people that are unimportant to me is worth it 100x over.

I'm not one of those guys who preach against the use of socials – I know they are positive for a lot of people, but I do not plan on turning back. (about 18 months off of IG/Snap/Twitter for reference)

Also, he won the 70.3 Half Iron World Championships last year.

23-25 y/o here. Deleted IG/snap/twitter my junior year of college. Did it because I had everything I thought I had wanted.. social life above and beyond expectations, good job offer, decent academic performance, far above average physique.. but still wasn't happy / at peace with where I was at in life. Was difficult the first couple of months due to FOMO, but eventually I came to peace that if it was an activity I only would've participated in courtesy of social media, it probably wasn't best for me.

Fast forward a few years later and I'm glad I pulled the trigger when I did. Don't have to pretend to give a shit about a bunch of things / people I used to. I've got a much smaller, but tighter knit group of friends that mean the world to me. It's even turned into a running joke that I pretty much take the L on anything and everything pop culture.

TL/DR: Life is too short to constantly compare yourselves to others and attempt to out-flex. Without the gram, you'll still stay in contact with those that truly matter in your life.. don't worry about the others.

It definitely has a negative effect on mental health. There's gotta be some type of correlation between girls with mental health issues and social media usage.

I used to be all on board with the IG culture is trash argument. And it still is trash, but it’s got a purpose and I see that now and I just use it as a dating tool when I want. I don’t go on there to see what other people are up to and couldn’t care less about everyone “competing” with flexes. Just recognize that it isn’t real and it shouldn’t bother you. If I’m single, I’ll post a decent enough looking picture or some cool shit that I’m up to on rare occasion so if a girl checks out my profile they can see what’s up. In a city for the weekend, throw up a story that tags where I’m at and maybe some girl I’ve lost touch with will hit me up cuz she’s in the same city and wants to link up. Girl I used to hangout with throws up a pic in my city, easy reason to hit them up and go out.

When I’ve been in a relationship I go back to 0 involvement unless that’s about to die down and I wanna get ready to start playing the game again.

I have to confess - I used to mostly follow hot chicks showing booty. But after some time, it all just became too vapid.

These days, I mostly follow it for my hobbies - namely music etc. but even then, it just pisses me off. Same shitty dark patterns to get people in, same highly polished and unrealistic production.

Social media like IG is the #1 story of B.S, (excuse my language). It's a portrait of what people want you to see and think about them. At the end of the day, those smiling faces in front of picturesque monuments and amazing places is just a cover front. People want to make other people think they are doing and happier in life than they actually are. Social media can be toxic but in essence on the other side, it can be a good way to connect people.
