Incoming freshman at kelley what can I do now pre-semester
Posting this under IB, but not the only thing I would do/study.
What moves can I make right now when it comes to certs/courses or anything else to make me competitve before I get to my freshman year? I have time on my hands and don’t wanna waste it doing nothing until august.
Also, what is reasonable at kelley to shoot for and what is not?
Aim for IBW. As hard as it is, doing “nothing” can mean many things. Spend your time making yourself interesting outside of finance by naturally doing things you are passionate about, while also being cracked. Those are the kids that go far. If you are really bored, read R&P and start to practice technicals using the M&I guides and tools like Careerscend. That would be my advice.
Thank you for the reply.
I have heard of the workshops there, and I have looked into them. I know you recommend the investment banking one, but the corporate finance one seems appealing as well. What do you know about that if anything?
.
Going to be very difficult to place into investment banking from the corporate finance workshop if not connected. You have the best shot if you can be an interesting person while being knowledgeable about your stuff. I don’t go to the school so I’m not sure how it works, but I think that is the sentiment regardless of where you go.
if nondiv, prep for transfer apps in case u want to transfer to target
Kelley grad here. Ended up in consulting instead of IB, but here's some general advice on getting the best jobs out of Kelley.
1) Probably most important point here - relax a little bit and enjoy life for now. The most successful kids are not the hardos who know the most about finance, they're the ones who are extremely personable and also pretty smart. So, just focus on being social entering college and having some hobbies outside of school. Look into frats or business frats if that's your vibe.
2) Get as high of grades as possible your first year, because those will be your grades when you recruit for junior year internships. Take finite math at ivy tech over the summer if you can, and try to get a 4 or 5 on AP Calc AB. Those will get you out of the two math courses you have to take, which generally give people the most people trouble. Other than that, not much you can really do to prepare yourself here.
3) No job is really unachievable out of Kelley - I know people from my class who got MBB and Goldman/JPM IB without being diversity. Granted, they were in the workshops, but you should be fine for MM IB/T2 consulting jobs regardless even if you're not. If you really only want the very best jobs and are scared about not making the workshops, consider transferring after freshman year. Knew a kid from my dorm who transferred to Cornell, so possibilities are definitely there.
Thank you for the response. The finite math recommendation is golden, but can you give a little more information on the AP calc? Will I have to take that course at IU?
