Instagram Skews Reality

In a world where social media is dominant and people follow celebrities religiously, do you think that many people live in a false reality? Rappers, "rich kids of Instagram," diamonds and throwing around bundles of cash. What do you think this does to the average high school child or college freshman?

It feels like the newer generation thinks that this is the norm and it's common to have expensive things while never having to work. Does anyone have thoughts at whether this affects younger people into thinking that little work equates to luxury? Back in the day a Rolex was earned, not given....

Who gives a shit? Is it dumb that people's entire job is "social media entrepreneur?" Of course it is, but good on them for making money doing something dumb.

As far as people's "FOMO" from others' lives looking cooler, they need to get a grip.

You might when you read the studies on dopamine receptor burnout in young adults that resembles drug addicts.

I for one wont be surprised if there is a world wide outbreak of workplace shooting by people in out generation and the next over the next 15 to 25 or so years.

I saw a post the other day it read something like "I quit instagram because Nxxxas be going to fcking Mount Everest to take sneaker pics. I just can't fcking compete anymore".

And most of those celebrities die poor once their source of income dries out as you can't do the staff at age 50 say? Celebrities live for now, I always tell my wife. They need to be trained to use their talents well and to save money.

Personally I don't find a lot of value tracking the lives of IG superstars, but I know that a lot of my friends do. Yeah, I think it has an adverse effect on the psyche of the modern kid, but I think it comes down to understanding that these people don't represent the vast majority of people. Unfortunately, some kids don't have this concept taught to them.

interesting post. i've had these same thoughts.

but it's something we can't change. humans as a species naturally gravitate towards those with better potential to bear/provide for their offspring. naturally, it's wealth for men, and beauty/appearance for women.

after all, you don't see millions of followers for an Instagram channel called "Poor Kids of Detroit" or "Generally unattractive semi-obese girls of Florida".

again, it's human nature, it's been going on forever.
social media serves as to amplify and speed up the attention seeker/seeking activity.

It definitely affects the lives of youth in a negative way. Bought my little brother a pair of the Adidas Purespeed cleats for his birthday recently, he put that shit on instagram and kids were drooling over them. It was kind of sad to look at because he was just boasting to others about nice things he was given. I came down pretty hard on him for it too. It's never good to brag about material possessions, it shows a major flaw in character and I think that's something that needs to be communicated effectively to younger generations.
