Is living in Queens too far?

I’ll be starting in January. My office is in Midtown East. My firm is paying for Uber to and from the office. I found a place in Queens around Astoria for a great price and it’s the best place I’ve seen so far. It’s a 30 minute subway ride and a 20-25 minute car ride. Would that be too far or does anyone have experience living that far?

Didn't live in Queens, but out in Brooklyn. My commute was a little longer, usually taking me a 10-15 min walk to the subway and then a 40 min ride to get to the office. My big problem was the living situation, a really dirty house with 10 guys, 1.5 bathrooms, it was definitely illegal lmao. But sounds like you won't have that problem.

Astoria? To Midtown east? Too far?!?!

No.

Seriously, Astoria is probably about the best bang for your buck if you're working in midtown east.  Would you even have to transfer or can you just take the N the whole way?  That's about the same as living in murray hill and working downtown. Astoria's also got a pretty good vibe IMO.  Your biggest problem will be bringing dates home, although it may help if you say 'Astoria' not 'Queens.' Astoria and LIC have a very 'inner brooklyn' feel, while queens conjures a crowded detached home suburbia in the vein of kew gardens.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

Definitely doable! Just depends on whether you are willing to do it everyday. The commute for me to Midtown from LI (much further in than Astoria/Queens) was around an hour or so. I would drive 15 mins to the station and then take a 30 min train on peak, plus 10 min walk/subway. If you plan it correctly, then it won’t be a problem at all. I will say that traffic is a bitch and missing my direct train would mess up my whole day since some take up to 48 mins. There are days where it took me less than an hour and days that have taken much more. Some of my friends actually had a 2+ hr commute before they could move, so you can do it for sure.
