Managing time as a SA
I’m going into my first summer analyst role this summer and I know the hours are going to be long. I’ve heard from a current intern that they don’t go home before 10 at the minimum. I have done previous internships but those were at smaller MM shops where people generally did less hours. I’m seeking advice on how to effectively adjust my daily schedule and manage my time. I’m currently in school and my workload is pretty light this semester so I have a lot of down time. How can I adapt to the drastic change in my schedule? Also, how do you guys generally manage your time when working many hours during the week, i.e. with sleep, going to the gym, cooking, chores, seeing friends/family, etc, all while it being sustainable long term? Thank you in advance
In terms of your summer internship, your only two priorities should be work and sleep during the week. My guess is that interns at your bank always leave after 10pm because they don't want to leave before almost all full-timers which I agree that you shouldn't do unless they make clear that you should head home for the night. Being an intern means you won't have a lot of responsibility and will probably have your weekends entirely off outside of maybe an hour or two on Sundays or taking notes during some meetings that pop up (only probably happening for a live deal if it's the weekend). During the summer, the weekend is when you should catch up with your friends and family over the phone, go to the gym, cook, do chores, etc. If you do find yourself getting out of the office early like 7 or 8 pm, then feel free to go to the gym or call your friends and family. Even 10 pm isn't that bad - as long as you're asleep by 1 you should still be getting close to 7 hours of sleep and have time to call friends and / or take care of some small chores like laundry.
Now in terms of the future, when you're FT unless your group is known for always getting crushed, you will have plenty of nights that you get out of the office earlier than 10 pm. It's becoming more common practice that you can get out of the office earlier and wrap up work from home. Also you'll probably have days you WFH.
This is really helpful thanks
I second the first guy's post. I interned at a top MM shop over the summer (will be returning there in the summer), and these are a few pointers I received (but are by no means exhaustive or conclusive)
It's 10 weeks just grind and catch up over the wknd
