Mandates, Kissing ass & your status

So a 16 year old kid pops into the office today, turns out to be the son of this co.'s CEO coming for a 1 week unpaid work experience. My manager is supposed to be the one in charge of his week's experience. He planned out an entire schedule for him, making him meet a whole of different guys at various departments. Just think how would have that looked on your CV if you did one of those when you were 16 !! Anyway that is for another time to discuss.

I on the other hand joined the bank a couple of months ago on a grad / intern contract. Despite that this is the title of the contract and the money is far less compared to other banks even at intern level, I did not have a problem when signing because I had to get my foot in the door in these "shitty" times. Nonetheless, I do not do an intern's work, I do not have a mentor / buddy like other grad programs, I am expected to work as if I have known this stuff since I was born or realisticly speaking as if i have been doing it for the last 2-3 years......etc.. I mean honestly I think analyst would be a more fitting title for my position.

All this apart , what really pisses me off is that I did not get to meet people at different desks even though I ask for it. I know that a mandate is important , but so is the guy doing all the grunt work for you so try to spare like 5 mins to give him some feedback / pearls of wisdom or whatever you want to call it .

Anyway this is all just thoughtst that I wanna hear what you people think about. No smart ass comments about just "do the work" and this stuff.

There are atleast 10,000 other guys who think it's unfair you have your job, while they're just as qualified to do it. You're actually pretty darn lucky to be able to do what you want in this crappy economic situation. Life's unfair man.

If this is bothering you that much, become the CEO so your kid can enjoy the perks that little kid's enjoying now. Also, if you want to meet people at other desks, do it yourself - meet them at lunch, run into them and start conversation e.t.c. You don't have to have these opportunities handed to you on a golden platter.

 

That's life man. I know just how you feel as there were kids that were just coming out of high school and interned at ML with me last summer that were paid because their parents knew the MD. They put in like 4 hours a day and got to go into meetings with the FA's while I was filing papers from 8-6 to prepare for an internal audit and I wasn't paid. That's just how it is sometimes. One of my favorite quotes from Wall Street: "So what is it? Mr. Cocksucker now?"

He, even at 16, is more important than you are. No one cares about you, you're expendable and interchangeable.

That's the way the world works, if you don't like it, do something to change that. Show your own worth and value. If you do a good job at it, people will bend over backwards to get in your good graces as well.

We had a similar situation some time back. One of our interns was the son of a VERY prominent PE guy. So prominent in fact, that it behooved just about everyone why he interned anywhere other than his dad's shop. In any case, we had a team of an MD, a VP and an associate who spent the better part of 10 weeks basically creating a lesson plan for this kid and personally spending all day cajoling him. He was the fuckin Black Tajima of interns. They'd take him out to lunches, the associate and VP would spend hours upon hours personally teaching him in a conference room. It was a bit ridiculous to watch, but not at all surprising.

As Edmundo mentioned in a thread he posted earlier today, if you're reading this forum, you're most likely already a genetic lottery winner. What you choose to do with it is up to you. Stop bitching and complaining about why the 16 year old kid gets a better opportunity than you.

 

Instead of being bitter, why don't you just become the kid's friend like everyone else?

If your manager is doing it you had better be doing it too.

God reading this post has made me realize just how bitter and jaded I really am. Thanks for the wake-up call.

 

I don t hate the kid after all he s just 16 and trust me i am the number 1 friend of the kid !!!. I just for a good 10 mins got angry at the fact that this did not happen to me even though i have a contract.

After all, i am a human being not a machine. I just share this stuff with you guys coz for me you are all more or less in the same boat and have seen much of the same i see everyday in banking. That what makes this website better than others cause there are people that went through the same stuff.

mmm maybe u misread the original, but I was whining about being here on day 1 with none there ( VP/ Associate /analysts ) for different reasons respectively and my manager coming specially for this guy at 8 30.

Honestly, if I were the CEO or owner and I had a 16 yo son, I'd probably do the same: make him an intern at my company (but also make sure he's busting his @$$ off everyday and learning the value of hard work in this business.)

The best thing you can do for him is to be a good role model in that respect. Pondering, complaining, or losing sleep over it is useless.

I'm surprised at the reactions of most people here. There are very few things in business that piss me off worse than nepotism. If you want to destroy the morale of all of the other employees of your firm, then go ahead and hire your son or son-in-law.

Personally, if I was in this situation, I would not be returning after the contract expired. Once the kid graduates college, he will be your boss solely for being part of the lucky sperm club. I would know that my career prospects were capped and would very likely be working for someone incompetent. Places that allow nepotism encourage only those employees who lack ambition to stay aboard the team. Those who are super ambitious know they can't rise to the top, no matter how hard they work.

I have kids and I would never allow them to work at my firm for this reason. I wouldn't want other employees resenting them (and rightfully so).

My only question is, how early is too early? If other rich folks' kids are doing this at 16, maybe I should start at 12.

Come to think of it, it would be pretty f'in preftigious for them to have paid internships on both the buyside and sellside by the time they're out of middle school.

Hmm. Maybe I need to start asking my regular intern candidates if they have any experience running circle time and show and tell.
