Microfinance: real deal or absolute shit?

Based on the SB/MS ratio I got from a post on the IBD forum, opinions about microfinance on WSO are mixed and very polarized.

What do you think about microfinance?

Personally I think it's useful to smooth consumption - i.e. make one's financial resources more stable throughout the year - but I don't believe it is effective in terms of pure financing. When you look at the "businesses" launched by those receiving microloans, you see retail and trade, not industrial production, which leads me to think that microfinance won't help to generate wealth.
