Morning rush
Trying to lay off caffeine for a while. What are some good alternatives to get a boost for the early morning commute?

Career Resources
Ice water
some amount of aerobic exercise.
Citrus fruits as soon as you wake up + clean carbs for breakfast. In general a balanced diet/eating clean will give you more energy than anything else.

Skeptical.
I agree, went from eating like shit to mainly vegan/vegetarian diet for the past year. You will have so much more energy and look better as a plus.
You'll look like a little bitch because you will be a little bitch. Men eat meat. We kill animals and fish and we pillage chicken nests and we eat that shit and grow fierce.
Surprised this thread has gone this long without a reference to cocaine or other "banker drugs".
i was fully expecting the first comment to say coke
Hilarious.
This is the pussification of wall street that ice water was the 1st suggestion.
sex
Water, water, water.
Cold Lemon Water
Hilarious.
provigil, nuvigil, study drugs, antidepressants, in that order, your mileage may vary. seriously just suck it up and drink the coffee.

Ice water...then coke
Ephedrine
EC stack is great
Grind some pink sea salt into a cup of water (seriously). It helps to get my system going in the morning.
I thought you were going somewhere different after those first 5 words. #bathsaltsFTW
$10 says nobody would fk with you after you ate someone's face
I can't believe no one has said the scientifically proven answer. An apple provides a better boost than caffeine in the morning. Look it up...
Taco Bell's new Waffle Taco - it's full of all the vitamins and nutrients required for an energetic start and a productive day!
I have some friends that swear by mate. A tea made from yerba mate leaves.
mate is wonderful, but it's an acquired taste. I drink it and they have it at most major grocery stores, but it's cheapest at Fresh Market
Definitely acquired taste. Had to just say no after tasting it.
it's ok, still has matteine which is pretty similar to caffeine as far as i know.
brought a bunch of coca tea back from peru, gives a nice little boost
Well..then scratch that! OP wanted no caffeine.
Just find the nearest empty subway car and sit next to the one guy in it. That should wake you up........
Rub one out.
Can people stop saying drugs are the way to go on this thread: A. None of you are even able to afford cocaine because a gram of it costs as much as your monthly rent B. Guaranteed you don't do it yourself because of drug testing at BB banks and you would never have the balls to show up to work on anything C. Stop thinking drugs are cool and idealizing people like Jordan Belfort, because you will live a miserable life
A) I wish my rent was that cheap B) Not all banks drug test and the ones that do only do it for pre-employment screening C) YOLO
I guess none of you have got a promotion recently, which requires another drug test.
Bobb do you have a SWAG hat to accompany your YOLO sweater?
Chill out, the comments are obviously tongue-in-cheek and are meant to contrast the ice water and clean carb-type advice with Wall St. stereotypes. Also, have you seen all the threads here asking about drug testing? I don't think anything guarantees that the people on here would be all that deterred from showing up to work on something.
shit...i'm overpaying
Where do you live? The Congo?
As for myself, I just stay miserable until about 11AM. That's about when I mentally awaken. Every so often I get up at 5AM and work out, but for the most part I drag myself through the morning and hit my stride from noon - 8/9PM. I find that caffeine ruins my focus (much as I like it).
Square.
But seriously, EC Stack is the best.
Rub some peppermint essential oil under your nose. Stings a bit but it gets me going.
Vyvanse will give give you way more energy then caffeine
YOLOOOO muthafuckas #swaggyy
Drugs are bad mmmkay... But seriously if the guy is trying to get off caffine I thnk coke might just be going the wrong direction. Best thing is to drink cold water as soon as possible after waking up, and eating a small amount of food avoiding anything very fatty or full of refined carbs. Or you can always go the speed metal/ hardcore techno route; your neighbors and roommates might hate you but it will help you get going at least until you leave for work.
Oh and seriously drugs tests only catch 3 types of people, addicts, pot heads and idiots.
Mate is good. While it does have caffeine it has a different effect than other caffeinated beverages- it contains other stimulants. If you haven't tried it yet give it a shot.
N.O.-Xplode
check out preworkout powders that dont contain caffeine. This one is caffeine & stimulant free.

Jump out of bed as soon as your alarm goes off then yell really loud and turn on "let me clear my throat" then chug 1/2 nalgene of water.
I'm going to try listening to through the fire and flames while chugging a pitcher of ice water
so did everyone eat an apple for breakfast today?
Yerba mate has about 1/3 the caffeine of coffee but the other natural chemicals it has give you more focus and improved concentration.
Tea or De-Caff coffee?
Cold showers, they wake you right up, and also calm the CNS
-Exercise -Green Tea -Lots of water (the hangover cure) -IlliniProgrammer's "Guilty Disco Favorites" playlist
I don't drink coffee till the afternoon which happens to be my only cup for the day and I don't get much sleep either. Here are some of the things I do:
Morning: 30 min exposure to extremely bright artificial sunlight (10,000 lux+) - usually do this after waking up while catching up on markets or emails. Crushes your melatonin production and improves your mood, leaving you much more alert than a cup of coffee. Also made me time-zone invariant.
Afternoon: Blend some MCT oil (increases energy levels and metabolism) and butter with my coffee. No caffeine crash.
Evening: 30-90min of cardio. I go with thai boxing, thrice a week.
Night: Protein shake and a tablespoon of raw honey 2h later before calling it a day... raises liver glycogen levels when you sleep so you wake up much more energized as long as you aren't having too many carbs.
100% on everything in your post sans the bulletproof coffee. I think that guy is full of shit. I tried it for a few weeks earlier this year. Aside from making me fatter, I noticed no difference between that and a regular cup of coffee. "Toxins" my ass lol.
I'm with you on that one, although the key ingredient is MCT oil.
Curious, why the butter?
Lots of water and a balanced breakfast if you have time. Eggs, turkey sausage, toast, avocado/other fruit. Nothing beats a solid breakfast.
5 hour energy
cocaine
Agree with @"Macro Arbitrage" on sunlight. I never realised how much it wakes you up in the morning until I moved to a place this year with an east facing bedroom. I'm not a morning person but feel terribly awake with the sunlight. It makes getting out of bed much easier.
If you can't get sunlight in the morning, there are USB powered full spectrum lights you can get that sit on top of your monitor. I have one on mine that I use sometimes in the morning and after lunch, when I remember. I'm still not sure if they are junk science quackery yet, though.

Where's the data for MCT's?
"Data": http://jn.nutrition.org/content/132/3/329.short http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2739575 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7072620
Interesting. How do you discount for placebo effect?
2012 study shows inconclusiveness http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22566308
Good find, although by skim reading that paper I am unsure under what grounds the benefits were deemed inconclusive. Seems like a hollow statement.
Either way, I realize MCT is unorthodox, sorta foggy and many fitness junkies haven't even heard of it. Fwiw my energy levels are noticeably high given the time I sleep although how much of that is attributed things like mct is something I'll never be able to answer. I know professional fighters use it and I'm also a sucker for asymmetry in both life and markets.
I have nothing to sell, but here's an overview for those interested: http://www.healthywaynaturalfoods.com/resources/articles/supplement-of-…
Many fitness junkies haven't heard of MCT's? I must disagree with that statement, because I learned of MCT's in my ugrad college nutrition courses ~10+ yrs ago.
Read the abstract. States inconclusivity. The link you sent contracdicts your statements.
You're all old men. I just wake up and get on with my shit.
If you're groggy from doing bad shit the night before, I find it's good to transition your mind, body, and soul by doing some more before work. Maybe to 30% capacity.
He's right (in as far as Chinese people go). A lot of ethnic Chinese have muscular, shapely calves, at least in the southern regions. They look much better than the chicken legs you see on many Europeans (myself included). I noticed it a lot when I lived in Hong Kong and travelling through southern Chinese provinces.
You could bo tong with those calves. Guangdong yuan gerk tong ho kiu yum!
I'm still in amazement how a discussion of caffeine alternatives in the morning turned into a thorough analysis of Chinese calves.
WSO
sigh and I'm not even Chinese...I didn't want to argue but to be fair I got called a bitch just cuse I'm a vegetarian and not responding WOULD make me a bitch..
@"MJK" people greatly overestimate how much protein you actually need, protein supplants are way overkill, your body will not use all that extra protein. You get a lot of protein from veggies and carbs, as well as from fruits, nuts, tofu.. I still eat eggs on occasion which is a good source. Vitamin B12 deficiency is one thing that could result from 100% plant based diet, but not protein deficiency. Milk making your bones stronger is also a myth that's not true. My go-to breakfast/lunch is oatmeal with peanut butter & banana/Falafel with big scoop of hummus. That's a ton of protein in just those two meals
I go to a muay thai gym and bike on a regular basis, I put on muscle just fine without needing extra protein supplements. Woody Harrelson's a vegan and that guy looks great
You get protein from carbs?
I'll look more into it--definitely not an expert. What can I do to prevent B12 deficiency? I know protein is a bit overblown as a concern and I'm pretty small so I doubt I'll need massive amounts but still.
edit: broke the I shouldn't-ask-what-I-can-google rule. NVM.
So what you're saying is, meat and calf raises will suffice as my alternative to caffeine
Calf raises will put a spring in your step.
