moving to singapore - need a roommate
Hey guys,
Im fielding an offer which would require me to relocate to singapore. I thought i would try my luck for some advice on where to stay from any fellow monkeys that have lived there or perhaps even anyone living there currently with a place to stay. Let me have it!
I assume you are talking about renting a room.
Room rental varies according to location. If you want to live near central Singapore, where all the business activity takes place, it will be more expensive. You will save on travelling time to the office but you will most likely need to pay more rent.
Room rental varies according to type of apartment too. Government housing called HDB will be much cheaper to rent as compared to condominiums which normally come with security guards, gyms and swimming pools.
Best to go through an agent than approach the landlord directly. There have been cases of money handed over to 'fake' landlords. These fraudsters will bring to a unit which they claim is theirs and when you hand over the rental deposit, you discover the unit belongs to someone else.
you don't rent condos* i think you mean apartments
*unless directly from owner, which is more rare than apartments
If you're looking to rent just a room, as opposed to an apartment - expect to pay anywhere from 500 to 4000 USD a month, depending on where exactly you want to stay. As others have noted, cheap-ish public housing is available in Singapore, and you can pick up a single room in a not-too-inconvenient location (about a half-hour or less to the city centre via the subway, including time taken to get to the subway station closest to your apartment) for

I wont be moving over to end July early Aug. So, pitty I wont be able to make the first gathering. I've done quite a bit of research on expat forums etc regarding the different types of housing etc. HDB, apartment and condos - I was more so looking for insight into specific areas that would be good to live in from any of the guys living there now. Also, v interested if you or a friend/colleague has a room for rent. Maybe short term while I get settled, or if it works well, long term.
