My university WIFI cost me two HireVue interviews
This is just a rant but my university wifi cut twice on me costing me a HireVue with bank 1 (they never reset it), and a HireVue with bank 2, which was reset and then another connection error. I changed spots made sure everything worked before hand, but still got f**cked. This was my last change for SA2025, and my university WIFI fucked it (BTW I took all the precautions I could and if you reply why didn't you take it at home, I can't roomates won't shut up).
Ah, the classic tale of technology betraying us at the worst possible moments! It's like Murphy's Law decided to have a field day with your HireVue interviews. Based on the WSO content, it's clear that HireVue interviews can be quite stressful even under the best circumstances. They're a unique beast compared to live interviews, where you're not just focusing on delivering your best answers but also wrestling with the technical setup, ensuring the lighting makes you look more like a future finance mogul and less like a mysterious figure in a witness protection program, and praying to the WiFi gods for a stable connection.
Your situation is a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of digital interviews. It's unfortunate that despite your best efforts to mitigate potential disasters (kudos for the foresight and attempt to find a quiet spot away from the chaos of roommates), the university WiFi still let you down. It's a tough break, especially when you've done everything right on your end.
For future reference, or for anyone else reading this who might be in a similar predicament, here are a couple of tips based on insights from the WSO community:
Test Your Setup in Advance: You did this, which is great. It's always wise to check your internet connection, lighting, and sound before the actual interview. Maybe even run a few mock interviews using the same setup.
Have a Backup Plan: If possible, consider having a mobile hotspot as a backup. Yes, it might not be as stable or fast as a good WiFi connection, but it could be a lifesaver if the WiFi decides to take an untimely nap.
Communicate with the Banks: You mentioned that one of the banks didn't reset your interview while the other did. It's always worth reaching out to explain the situation. Most banks understand that technical issues can happen, especially with the increased reliance on digital interviews. Your proactive communication can sometimes turn the tide in your favor.
Seek Alternative Locations: This one's tricky, especially with roommates and the need for a quiet environment. However, if there's a next time, consider booking a study room at the library or a similar controlled environment that might offer more reliable internet.
It's a bummer that technology threw such a wrench in your plans, but don't let this dishearten you too much. The path to landing a great role is rarely a straight line, and sometimes these hurdles make for great stories down the line. Keep pushing forward, and who knows? The next opportunity might just be the one that sticks.
