China has not “backed” anyone yet.

The only thing they have said is that they recognize “Russia’s legitimate security concerns” while at the same time recognizing Ukraine’s sovereignty

Wang, the foreign minister of China, said the “sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of any country should be respected and safeguarded,” adding, “Ukraine is no exception.”

I guess that depends on your definition of “backed”:

Never going to happen. Nobody can afford a war, it would be political suicide. Will be a lot of speeches, political statements, attempted UN resolutions before the news cycle moves on to how shitty Truth Social is or whatever the fuck next week's flavour is.

My heart goes out to the people of Ukraine. I don't know what else to say or what I have to offer. All political ambitions and power grabs are built on the ashes of the common people.

I don't know man. Not an expert, I don't know shit about geopolitics other than what I read in the news.

Lots to fight for but is there will for a war with China? I don't think American people want a war, people are sick of conflict after the disasters of Iraq and Afghanistan. Not to mention all the problems at home. But can the US afford to abandon an ally? Probably not. The repercussions would be quite significant.

Geographically Taiwan is strategically located. Is getting a hold of TSMC enough to spark a war? Maybe, I dunno.

Lots of factors and egos at play here. Wayyyy above my pay grade. Am just trying to mark up a deck and get home to catch some zzzzs.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/ukraine-crisis-russia-declares-war-on-…

"Explosions have rocked several Ukraine cities, including the capital Kyiv, as Russia launches "full-scale war", says the Ukrainian Government.

Russian president Vladimir Putin declared a "special military operation" but the Ukraine Interior Ministry said the Russian invasion had started. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called it "full-scale war".

US president Joe Biden and other western leaders have condemned Russia's move – but Putin warned them that any attempt to interfere with the Russian action would lead to "consequences they have never seen.""

China doesn't back anyone. They are perfectly happy watching on the side lines and getting some cheap gas from Russia. They just happen to need Russia a bit more currently so will pay some lip service in addition to collecting those cheap gas.

Also, China needs at least another 10 years to make a play for Taiwan and even then it is questionable if they will. Taiwan is an existential issue for the CCP so unless they are absolutely certain of victory they won't make a move.

China will probably stay out of the way, in some ambiguous stance, but make no mistau, definitely taking notes on 1) playbook and 2) reactions from USA (and the west).

I guess you are right it may take China a while to make a move on Taiwan, but under the assumption, that the US effectively shows support for Taiwan. Not some ambiguous talk on sanctions or sending a few thousand sailors. That's the asymettry in these situations: for Russia (and China in the case of Taiwan) it has way more depth (politically, internally, geopolitically, and probably ideologically) than for the US (and probably the rest of "the west"); other than economics and some acceptable balance of order.

As someone wrote above... Great start of the decade

China is always going to assume US involvement. The key difference between Russia and China is that for China reunification is the goal and that goal is much more popular with its populace. On Ukraine Putin is going in for maximum leverage on negotiations towards a Finlandization of Ukraine and then get out. So the difficulty for China is higher and so is the cost of failure for Xi. China is vastly expanding its nuclear arsenal in the next decade and the end game will be to out chicken the US on Taiwan to force a favorable political settlement. China doesn't have what it takes to win that game of chicken yet so it will make a lot of noise and use economic leverage. Very different from what you see from the Russians.

My prayers to all the people who will die or get injured in this conflict.  It's really shocking that anyone would be so brash to start a conventional war in Europe in the 21st century.

This article really blames the invasion of Ukraine on the fact that Biden shut down the Keystone XL pipeline. (which was 10% done...) 😂😂

What's the Republican policy on Ukraine again?  Same as Afghanistan and Inflation, they whine and whine about Biden but their policy positions are not different at all.

I am mostly critical of Biden but I don’t think he had any option here. Oil going up because Biden condemns killings of Kashogi and others and doesn’t suck up, like Trump, to Saudis who control a large part of OPEC? I voted for Trump but his sucking up was something I was never a fan up. Natural gas we have no feasible alternative to Russia right now or the near future.

Libs like Drumpfy that until yesterday kept cheering how straight white males will be faded out of existence and blamed them for all the problems in the world, all of a sudden want us to fight for them.

Pass. Diversity is your strenght, this is your time to shine

The one who has been cheerleading Putin and this invasion this whole time, which will certainly leave countless white guys dead, claims I want straight white guys to "fade out of existence".

Do you even believe the shit you write?

Have you tried writing an article about it? Tweeting about it? Neons with yellow and azure?

Nordstream is dead.  See if there are hardcore sanctions on Russian nationals globally. I doubt it will happen but the "nuclear option" (short of actual nukes) would be to cut Russia out of Swift.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

Russia has a relatively good relationship with Israel.  (At least prior to this nonsense)  So why is Russia against Zionism?
