For NYC summer intern housing, affordability is a challenge, especially for investment banking interns. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some recommendations:
Hudson Square: A viable option with costs ranging from $1.5k to $2.5k per month. If you have roommates, it can be even cheaper. The neighborhood is upscale but farther from most offices.
Murray Hill / Gramercy: Popular for midtown offices. Renting solo will cost around $2k-$3k per month, but with roommates, it drops to $1.5k-$2.25k. Sublets or Airbnbs are common here.
Long Island City (LIC): Located in Queens, just 1-2 train stops from midtown. The cost of living is lower, and while nightlife isn't great, proximity to the city compensates. Hunter's Point in LIC is pricier but offers a nicer neighborhood.
Battery Park City: A popular choice for downtown/FiDi offices. It's a quieter area with a good reputation, but prices can be steep.
Craigslist or College Sublets: Some interns have found short-term rentals in the $400-$600/month range by negotiating with college students who leave for the summer. These may not be luxurious but are sufficient for a short stint.
Avoid NYU Dorms: Dorms like those at NYU charge around $2.4k/month and are not considered great value for the price.
If you're looking to save, consider finding roommates (preferably fellow interns) to split costs. Start searching in late March or early April, and aim to finalize a place by May.
