Having a conversation and fostering a relationship is an art not a science. Find common ground with a person and be genuinely interested in them. Otherwise smile and nod. There's no framework to a conversation.

In terms of being a better person just be laid back, positive, and go with the flow. Life becomes much more pleasant when you get rid of the notion that you need to make your life "optimal".

Listen more talk less is a great way to live, and one upping people is a sure fire way to alienate people. Just put yourself in situations where you have to socialize or practice these skills (fraternity, sports, volunteering), and you'll get better. Godspeed
