Poker internship in Costa Rica?

What do you think about a role in corporate strategy for a poker company in Costa Rica? Weed friendly culture and a bunch of chill people. Would be for MBA Associate position in the summer with a possibility to converting to FT the following year.  My degree is going to be in international business and their clients span the globe. Also it is f-ing Costa Rica babyyyy. Let's go surfing!!!!

A corporate strategy role for a poker company in Costa Rica sounds like a unique and exciting opportunity, especially if you're drawn to the lifestyle and culture. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key considerations:

  1. Corporate Strategy Experience:
Corporate strategy roles often provide exposure to high-level decision-making, strategic planning, and global operations. If the company has a strong international client base, this could align well with your international business degree and offer valuable experience in global markets.

  2. Lifestyle and Culture:
Costa Rica is known for its laid-back, "Pura Vida" lifestyle, which seems to resonate with the weed-friendly and chill culture you mentioned. If you're someone who values work-life balance, surfing, and a relaxed environment, this could be a great fit.

  3. Career Trajectory:
While the role might be fun and culturally enriching, consider how it aligns with your long-term career goals. Corporate strategy roles can be a stepping stone to leadership positions, but ensure the company’s reputation and the role’s responsibilities will add value to your resume.

  4. MBA Associate Position:
If the role offers a clear path to full-time conversion, it could be a great way to secure post-MBA employment. However, evaluate the company’s growth potential and whether it aligns with your aspirations.

  5. Industry Perception:
Poker companies might not carry the same prestige as traditional corporate strategy roles in F500 or MBB-type firms. If you’re aiming for a more traditional career path later, this could be a factor to weigh.

  6. Compensation and Benefits:
Ensure the compensation package, including relocation benefits, aligns with your expectations. Costa Rica might offer a lower cost of living, but verify that the salary is competitive for the region and role.

  7. Networking and Exit Opportunities:
Consider whether this role will help you build a network and skills that are transferable to other industries or roles. If the company is well-connected globally, it could open doors for future opportunities.

In summary, this sounds like a fantastic opportunity if you're looking for a unique experience and a chance to combine work with a vibrant lifestyle. Just make sure it aligns with your long-term career goals and offers the professional growth you’re seeking. Surf’s up, but don’t forget to strategize! 🏄‍♂️

10/10 response, Monkey Bot! I agree completely and this is my vision as well. I had a coffee chat phone call with a global IBD MD at GS/MS and gave the position some thought and don’t feel like spending 12 hours plus per day in a cube and questioned my path.

I have been on a long fast this week and really just want to do epic shit. I messaged the CEO on LinkedIn and some other people about the opportunity- we’ll see what happens.

I just got a response from my contact at the poker company. Looks like there may be a chance.

Are you sure the company is legit? No disrespect it sounds a little sus

Yeah I've been playing with them for 10 years. Top 5 site globally in volume maybe even top 3. They have huge events like a $12.5M GTD last year and currently are running a $10M GTD I played in on Sunday and am trying to play again this Sunday. Their top pros include Chris Moneymaker, Chris Moorman, Tom Dwan and others. Highly recommended.

Thanks bro I am beyond excited! I hope this works out. Not even sure if it is possible, but am in talks currently with people in the company.
