Possible Naval War in the Caspian Over Energy Resources?

In the past three decades the Islamic Republic of Iran has developed a well-earned sense of paranoia. First, in September 1980 Saddam Hussein invaded Iran in what he thought would be a quick military victory, but which quickly turned into an eight-year bloody slugfest, leaving an estimated 500,000-1,000,000 dead before the guns fell silent.

More recently Iran has been subjected to increasingly militant rhetoric from both Tel Aviv and Washington over its civilian nuclear energy program, with thinly veiled threats of possible military action if Tehran does not abandon its efforts, even though they are completely complaint under the terms of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which Iran has signed.

Now however, potential is brewing for Iran from an unexpected direction – the north. Full article: Could Energy Resources Cause Russia to Spark a Naval War in the Caspian?

  1. It's not a civilian nuclear program - they have all the fossil fuels they need and are developing balistic missles

  2. If they go live with the nuclear, yes, we will take them out or will let Israel off their leash so they do it for us....there is no doubt in my mind on this point.

  3. Russia is not so interested in human rights...they may just take them out before Iran is a real problem

  4. I would have some sympathy, but they are the nexus of funding and support for most terrorism in MENA and beyond. Iran has created their own problems and can't be trusted, at all, so too bad for them

  5. They would do better to start using their oil wealth to develop their society. They will loose in a war.

I feel like a minor (non-nuclear) conflict between Russia and Iran might actually be a good thing? Iran has some pretty serious enemies (US, Saudi, Israel) in the region, and having Russia take'em down a notch might be a lucky lightning strike.
