Not trying to start an Israel/Palestine discussion... that's not at all the point I'm trying to make here, but am I the only one completely weirded out by the fact that any American that comes out publicly and says something contrary to the prevailing media narrative immediately retrenches within a matter of seconds? Even if its completely benign?
There's a pretty appalling failure of freedom of speech here. It doesn't have to be a government mandated suppression of views and beliefs, when you're in a society where people are afraid to express themselves that's pretty concerning.
Given the ones I've seen are bubble head celebrities... they're the only ones that get any attention in the media (Dwight Howard and Rhianna come to mind) but celebrities are no strangers to expressing controversial and incendiary political views without yielding to criticism.
And so I'm flabbergasted by how quickly they change their tone. There presumably thought it was okay, and so they posted on their Twitter or Facebook or whatever... and then something happened and in a terrified frenzy they retracted their view. Maybe they were the dumb ones that had to be told not to Tweet Free Palestine lest they face the consequences... presumably are others that know better than expressing a view they know will get them in trouble.
In a society where you can speak out against the war in Iraq, speak out for Iran, against meat eaters, for or against homosexuality/abortion... where celebrities remain in the darlings of the public despite drug scandals, domestic violence, rape allegations, child orgy allegations etc. for there to be a view that is completely off limits for someone to express without seemingly having the daylights scared out of them is pretty concerning.
Agreed. I have an issue with the fact that you can't even hold an opinion or have a discussion without things becoming absolutely polarized. People are so quick to instantly financially or socially cripple anyone who shares an opinion that isn't popular. IMO, that is why these celebrities back peddle all the time. We live in a society where everyone is extremely sensitive and the answer to anything is to boycott/financially ruin someone that goes outside the status quo. At the very least it makes us all the more dull.
I am pro-Israel, but I have no problem with somebody voicing an opposite opinion. People today have become such massive pussies that they can't even hear something that isn't politically correct without freaking out. Our country was founded on freedom of religion - a fundamental state of agree to disagree.

I think it's frustrating how the liberal media tries to spin many social issues such that if you do not agree with their side (homosexuality and affirmative action come to mind) then you are ignorant/unintelligent. Marcus mentioned homosexuality as an issue we can speak out on, but I would say anymore that a celebrity tweeting something against it would be heavy attacked i.e. Chick-Fil-A. I'm not religious at all but I think homosexuality can be seen as a defect, if everyone was a homosexual we'd have no species. It seems like a genetic mistake to me much like many inherited traits or illnesses. I don't think these people should be demonized in anyway and it doesn't bother me that they marry. I think there may be some areas that go over the line a little bit such as adopting kids. Is that really fair to the kids? I personally would not want to be the kid in the class with 2 dads.
