Quarter Life Crisis

Hi everyone,

Quick background, was at T2 consulting firm, now at growth stage startup doing Data Science. I enjoy the job a lot but current comp and comp growth is just not good. Even though the company is doing well, I don't get enough equity for it to meaningfully improve earnings. I am at a cross-roads trying to figure out what to do and am exploring some of the data science roles (non-systematic quant) in finance.
1. L/S Alt Data Science at MM or SM. Are there any funds that are known to treat these guys ok? Does anyone know comp for the central data teams e.g., (Citadel Sector Data Analyst, P72 MI)

  1. Are the PE Data Science roles any good? The combo of consulting + DS seems like a good fit here

Any other ideas? This has been really messing with my head the past month where I don't feel like I am on track on to make enough money/support the lifestyle I would want.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it sounds like you're considering a pivot into the finance sector, leveraging your data science background. Here are some insights:

  1. L/S Alt Data Science Roles:

    • Funds like Citadel and Point72 are known for their data-driven approaches and could have roles that align with your skills.
    • Compensation can be competitive, with base salaries often supplemented by bonuses that reflect individual and firm performance.
    • These funds typically value talent and have resources to invest in their teams, which can translate to a good working environment for data scientists.
  2. PE Data Science Roles:

    • Your combination of consulting experience and data science skills could indeed be valuable in private equity.
    • PE firms are increasingly using data analytics for deal sourcing, due diligence, and portfolio management.
    • Compensation in PE can also be quite attractive, though it may vary depending on the firm's size and the role's seniority.

It's important to conduct thorough research on each path and consider reaching out to professionals in those roles for informational interviews. This can provide you with a clearer picture of what to expect and help you make an informed decision. Remember, compensation is just one aspect; consider the role's content, growth opportunities, and the work-life balance you're seeking.
