SCGC Search / Will Champagne

What’s the deal with this guy? In his job postings he bashes males, minorities, there was a post where he was like if u need sponsorship don’t bother, or if you are banker don’t apply, you won’t get a reply. Understand it’s his mandate and he can do whatever but has anyone ever gotten a job/interview from him?

Based on previous WSO threads, there isn't specific information about SCGC Search or Will Champagne. However, here are some general insights on dealing with recruiters and job postings:

  1. Recruiter Mandates: Recruiters often have specific mandates from their clients, which can include preferences or restrictions on candidate profiles. While it may seem harsh, they are typically trying to meet the exact needs of their clients.

  2. Experience with Recruiters: Some users have shared experiences where they felt the recruiter had already made up their mind before the interview. This can be frustrating, especially if the feedback could have been given earlier in the process.

  3. Long-Shot Applications: Users have also discussed taking long-shots at job applications, sometimes landing interviews or even offers from positions they felt underqualified for. This highlights the importance of persistence and taking chances.

  4. Diversity and Sponsorship: It's not uncommon for job postings to specify requirements around sponsorship or diversity initiatives. This is often driven by the company's specific hiring goals or legal requirements.

If you have specific concerns about a recruiter's behavior or job postings, it might be helpful to reach out to them directly for clarification or seek advice from others who have interacted with them.

I'm sorry, but it looks like this may be out of my ability to answer... maybe some of the links below might help?

Know multiple people who have gotten interviews and offers through him. I actually don't have a huge problem with how he posts, it's abrasive and exaggerated but closer to reality than pretending the average analyst from Deutsche industrials has a shot at a credible early stage software job.

The bigger problem is his coverage is bad. I think he gets attention because there legitimately ARE under-the-radar headhunters with weirdly good venture coverage (see JHB), so folks take him seriously thinking that's the situation, but in reality the jobs he posts just aren't usually that good (VMG, Soma, etc.). You're better off with Ratio / Gold Coast / Glocap / the usual PE and HF suspects.

As I mentioned elsewhere, we're a startup recruiting firm in the investment management space. We  pivoted from mostly VC-backed portfolio company searches to investment searches only about 3 years ago. So yes, it takes time to establish a brand, but we're growing rapidly, and we've been approached to be acquired by the giant search firms a few times already. I appreciate your patience.

Note that we don't do any PE searches; only VC, growth equity, and crossovers. That means you'll only hear from us every once in a while, as most of our clients are earlier stage and looking for ML engineers, Product Managers, and other technical talent.

FYI we actually do work with a couple of the 7-8 most reputable crossovers in the US and some of the well known brand name VC funds. But their bar is extreme, and we only very selectively reach out, based on highly specific requirements provided by them.

On some of my posts being abrasive, you're absolutely right. Lots of folks have been reaching out privately to thank me for saying things the way they are, but I know I've rubbed some the wrong way too. I've vowed to be more tactful going forward. Sometimes, to be frank, I just don't proofread and I realize after the fact that I messed up. That's obviously really not smart when you're on a public platform like LinkedIn.

FWIW I'm completely dumbfounded that I might have made a post denigrating minorities and immigrants. I'm an immigrant myself! I've looked through my last two years of posts and I just can't find what you're referring to, but let me proactively apologize for whatever I might have said that might have been in such poor taste. I remember when I worked in professional services prior to starting this firm, thinking that a lot of my personal experiences with headhunters had been horrible, and I vowed to do better when I started this firm. Now I've got to swallow my pride and actually do better. I hope you give us another chance next time we reach out.
