Self-preservation in the time of Covid

Perhaps nihilistic of me but my outlook = if you catch it, you catch it. If you die, you die. I’m not going to give up my daily runs or shopping for greens and produce to avoid something with a 0.01% fatality rate in people who are actually young and healthy (FYI, the media’s definition of young and healthy includes 60 year olds and the morbidly obese). But I see so many of my friends who are locked away in their apartments, probably amassing diabetes, blood clots, and vitamin D deficiency.

It’s surprising to me how many people are trembling in the wake of Covid and placing such high value on their lives when they obviously don’t give a shit about smoking a pack a day, eating 200g of carbs per meal, drinking their livers to hell, or not having exercised since high school PE class. Anyone else see the irony in all of it?

If you catch it, you catch it. If you die, you die. It doesn't mean I'm going to be a dick and not try to avoid getting people sick. I'm going to self isolate like a good little man and hope that I reduce the strain in the healthcare system so that more people can get a level of care that improves their odds of surviving and reduces the chances of lifelong symptoms.

I agree with this. What’s the cost to my life? Barley anything. I still remain healthy, meal prep, workout, my life is objectively good. I practice social distancing and don’t go out unnecessarily. Yeah, I cut down on some things. I don’t go out nearly as much. But what’s the benefit? I know I’m not making things worse. I could potentially cause a lot of harm to others.

I’m not going out unnecessarily.

I go outside solo to run, I go to grab groceries by my lonesome. I don’t touch every single apple before selecting one and I don’t caress all of the avocados like I’ve seen some people do. People I know are shitting on me for continuing with my daily jogs because ????! I interact with absolutely nobody whilst out, only saying thanks to the cashier when I can’t use self checkout.

That’s a whole lot better than a lot of fucking assholes who are ordering every meal via seamless and making someone else head out into the purportedly dangerous abyss that they are refusing to enter

I would say you’re not doing anything wrong at all. Nothing to do with self preservation. If people shit on you for taking a morning jog then ignore them? Your routine sounds pretty much like mine and I consider myself on the cautious side.

You seem very fun to be around.

"Incoming Analyst in IB - Gen" I agree bro- survival of the fittest. Gotta take some risks in life- otherwise we would all never go outside, drive cars, take vacations, go to the beach etc. There's risk everywhere in life and it's a much lower chance getting this virus and dying as a younger person.

This is clearly written by someone very early 20's who has yet to have a life setback of any consequence.
