Sense of Humor

My group of friends apparently have a “mean spirited” sense of humor. Some lady who overheard our conversation told us that. We’ve all been friends since at least high school and some since elementary school. We tend to get pretty rough with what we say to each other. Like this one friend lost his mom and we make fun of him for that. We all laugh and so does he. It isn’t meant to be mean, it’s just how we are. We have one Arab friend whose family came here after the war in Iraq and we tell him he should recruit for ISIS and not IB. I’m not insecure all of a sudden but what about all of you, any “mean spirited” humor when around close friends.

Lmao it does sound that way. We’re only like that around each other. We’ve never bullied anyone, but to us it’s fun pushing each other to the edge without pushing each other off.

We’re not like that all the time either, every once in awhile, one guy will say something and I say something and then we just start talking shit.

The lads and I shit on each other, like every other friend group in their early twenties, but idk how funny making fun of someone's dead mom is...

You’d be surprised, it did help with him getting over it. Like I said above it’s not constant but every now and then we talk mad shit. I guess some of it is unique to us.

Joking about someone’s parent dying? It’s one thing to roast each other for typical guy stuff.. like being a virgin, sucking at sports or video games, etc.. but you guys sound like absolute morons. Poor friend is probably going along with the jokes because he has no other support system to lean on. Why did you even make this topic? To show the world how dumb you are?

As someone whose parent passed during childhood, I can tell you that if someone makes a joke about that around me, I'm rearranging their teeth. I don't see how that couldn't hurt someone that is anything but a complete sociopath. So either you're psychologically torturing this dude and he feels pressured to laugh along, or he's a sociopath. Either way, you guys sound like awful company.

I'm pretty mean to my friends but not as far as making fun of someone losing a loved one. We tend to have a joke among the friend group that we are assholes to each other in person but speak very highly of one another to other people.

Dayman?

I guess it's unique to us. None of us trash each other in front of people we don't know. I guess when it comes to somethings we have a very dark sense of humor.

I was like this with my high school/uni friends and thought it was normal ..... But once you've had deeper, more supportive and considerate friendships you realise all the shit talking with 'mates' is actually shallow bullshit that is constantly dragging you down. Jokes don't always need to be at someone's expense. True friends want to see you succeed.

The 5 of us have been freinds for years, the newest guy in our "group" has been a friend for six years. We've seen each other fail and seen each other succeed, we helped each other along the way through it all. Maybe you got the wrong impression from the way I wrote this, we don't talk shit all the time. 85% of the time our convos are about normal things, the things I made this thread on come up once in a while. These guys are real friends, I've no doubt about that.
