Singapore vs Hong Kong
Which city do you prefer and why? Personally I like Singapore because it's marginally cleaner and has better weather.

Singapore because I'm not a huge fan of violence, protests and being invaded by another country
You talking about the Brits right? lol
Britannia brought civilization to every place it colonised except her African holdings and British Raj. Even Australia, a prison island became a G10 nation within hardly two hundred years.
invaded by another country lol.
idk if you are talking about 'china invade hk'. If so, obviously you don't have any knowledge about this. check wikipedia, read books, learn knowledge, and be aware of how biased those us medias are when reporting about Chinese issues.
I don't like talking about politics in a financial forum and I respect your right to speak. But, as a matter of fact, HK was governed by EVERY dynasty in Chinese history till the uk colonist took it away. It was given back to China in 1997 as a SAR.
Singapore is boring. And Hong Kong is dead
I suppose you'll love Lagos, population growth is like 9284% annually, plenty of excitement in the form of cartel wars, military coups, broken bridges, roads and tunnels. Also fun (and free) activities like engaging in a shootout with a random Nigerian gang three times a day while a bomb goes off in your country's embassy there.
I've always loved de_dust
Been a very long time since I was in that side of the world, but I prefer Hong Kong. To have access to "mountains' AND pretty nice beaches was amazing, as was the food and culture. Don't even get me started on the nightlife.
Singapore is too sterile and the rules too overbearing for me. Food and nightlife are on par with HK I'd say.
I'd love to find a healthy middle if that's possible. Preferably with 0 invasion by the Chinese.
Guy just said no Chineez while choosing between Hong Kong and Singapore.

WTF are you talking about, HK was a nondescript fishing village 150 years ago, and probably wasn’t settled 5000 years ago.
Haven't been to Singapore yet, but HK is awesome, sad it's a shell of its former self. That being said, food and nightlife is still probably really good. Singapore has fantastic food as well, but overall I feel like HK is a better package deal.
I'm surprised weather is not one of the major concerns for most people.
I hate Hong Kong's weather and everything stops right there.
Isn't Hong Kong considered temperate and tropical? Obviously it's not a paradise like Singapore, but it's still warm year-round.
It's a personal thing and for me it can be way too hot. I don't like warm, prefer the chills from time to time.
Singapore for sure. Singapore has a bit more of that exotic feel. You’re within a 2 hour plane flight to some of the most FUN countries on the planet (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia etc). Singapore itself has some of that south East Asia Wild West fun as well, but albeit stricter about a lot of other things. Hong Kong is great too, can’t go wrong with either one. Hong Kong is more sterile in a sense. However, I really do worry about China taking over Hong Kong and having massive political unrest. Singapore, although run very strictly, is an incredibly stable country. Plus, Everyone in Singapore speaks English fluently, whereas in Hong Kong many people don’t even speak English and you’re expected to know mandarin and more likely Cantonese.
Both are great, but personally I think Singapore is more fun, better location for traveling to the really fun countries near by for a weekend trip, speak English and you don’t have to worry about being invaded or having mass political protests in your streets.
What do you mean by this? Singapore is known for being clean, with littering being basically a capital offense there. I haven't been to Singapore, but HK feels very gritty/urban, in a way that Singapore doesn't (at least from photos online and what basically everyone who's been there has told me). Are you referring to the increasing CCP control of HK?
Certain parts of Singapore are very clean and tidy, but if you adventure to certain places (I don’t want to mention them online) you’ll realize there’s a different side to Singapore (that’s more fun and gritty imo)
Pre-China taking it over, it's a wash. Post, definitely Singapore. Nothing wrong with China taking it over btw, it is their territory after all -- I say this more in the sense that I'd probably have some concerns about personal safety given the violence there now & it's not longer the uninhibited area of excess it once was
Just left Hong Kong. It's a joke to even consider HK anything but dead right now.
In the long run, Hong Kong will come back and will maintain itself as a major financial hub in Asia. But everything else you knew about Hong Kong is fucking dead.
Seriously, the clubs, bars, nightlife, whatever that used to exist before covid is gone. The expat community has thinned out. The jobs are going more local, and no not Cantonese local, but mainland local.
Hard to overstate how much the past three years have hurt Hong Kong. It will never truly recover. And that's saying something.
Appreciate the insight. Mind if I pm you for some quick personal questions
Go for it
Really saddens me to hear this. Had some of the most legendary nights there, good memories around the Rugby 7s.
Going to provide a positive take. Hong Kong right now is pretty bad due to covid. However sooner or later the government will learn to live with it. Because it is easier to leave than to come right now, there is a lot of opportunities to be had. I've seen a good number of moves that I would have imagined to be harder during normal times (back office to front office, big jumps in responsibility or firm etc).
Long-term, I believe Hong Kong will still remain a financial center, especially benefiting from returning Chinese IPOs. There is still a lot of great food, amazing hikes, water sports, and can easily do day/weekend trips within North Asia. Taxes are low and it is very safe.
Nah it's definitely true. One way or another, Covid will end and what makes Hong Kong attractive will still be there.
But no one can pretend it's the city it once was. Hong Kong's access to China was only one aspect of the business value. Moving forward, it's likely to be the only value. And in the long-run, if China opens financial access even more, then Hong Kong's leading value proposition falls further.
So yeah, it's a beautiful place and offers an incredible life style - but when it reinvents itself, I don't expect it to be Asia's Global City in anything but name only.
