Dating co-workers can be a tricky situation, especially in high-stakes environments like finance. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key considerations:

  1. Potential Risks:

    • Awkwardness if Things Go South: If the relationship ends poorly, it can create tension and awkwardness in the workplace. This could affect team dynamics and your professional reputation.
    • HR Implications: Many firms require workplace relationships to be disclosed to HR to manage potential conflicts of interest. This could lead to changes in staffing or team assignments.
    • Perception Issues: Colleagues might gossip or perceive favoritism, especially if one person is in a senior position.
  2. Worst-Case Scenarios:

    • If the relationship is not handled professionally, it could lead to allegations of harassment or favoritism, which might jeopardize your career.
    • In some cases, as highlighted in WSO threads, relationships with significant power imbalances (e.g., senior-junior dynamics) have led to serious consequences, including job loss and reputational damage.
  3. Best Practices:

    • Keep It Professional: Avoid public displays of affection or behavior that could make others uncomfortable.
    • Disclose When Necessary: If your firm requires disclosure, be upfront with HR to avoid potential issues later.
    • Consider the Long-Term: Think about how the relationship might impact your career and whether it’s worth the risk.

While some couples have successfully navigated workplace relationships, the general advice remains: "Don’t mix business with pleasure." The stakes are high, and the potential fallout can be significant. If you decide to pursue a relationship, proceed with caution and professionalism.

Yeah a great way to tarnish your reputation, possibly get fired and land in jail (for false pretenses). That girl you think is an angel is probably a spiteful bitch capable of serious revenge actions for wrongs she thinks you did in her mind to justify them. Or even better, she has never reached the level of vengeance in her life yet and you're her first. Happy dating kids.

Moral of the story - don't date coworkers for fun. The only possible reason is if you think they are true marriage material.

you never know if they are marriage material if you don't try to date them first?

This has not been my experience. I've dated plenty of people for fun.

As the saying goes, don’t shit where you eat… unless you like eating ass. If you truly think this woman (or man) could be the parent to your kids, go for it. ~30% of Americans meet their spouses at work and I’ve personally seen it work out great. The big caveats are don’t be an idiot (don’t date someone super junior, or directly in your group), don’t fornicate and evacuate, and try testing the waters to get an idea if this person actually has mutual feelings before swinging for the fences.

And most importantly if they seem at all uninterested or uncomfortable, leave it be.
