Sixers - Nets - Harden - Fair Trade?
In the spirit of full and fair disclosure, I am Sixers fan. I think the trade between the Sixers and Nets was pretty fair. The Sixers probably gave up a little too much but they are trying to make a run this year ( We are going to try to forget about the 50 point embarrassing loss to the Celtics last night). The Sixers gave up Curry, Drummond, Simmons, and two first round picks for Harden. Curry and Drummond are okay players but are expendable while Simmons basically retired from the Sixers. The think the biggest concession was the draft picks.
Harden wanted out of Brooklyn and was going to be a free agent at the end of this season anyway. The Nets probably got a good haul for a guy who is going to be a free agent. No team is going to give up important starting players for a soon to be free agent. I think the Nets wanted Maxey or Thybulle but that was not going to happen.
Any thoughts?
Simmons wasn’t doing anything for them on the bench so the trade was essentially harden for curry and two picks. Fair trade
I agree that it was a fair trade. Both teams are in a better position post-trade deadline. It just wasn't working for the Nets and the Simmons-76ers problem speaks for itself.
The Sixers certainly can't be happy to lose Curry/Drummond but the addition of Harden easily outweighs those losses IMO. The Harden/Embiid combo works on paper so I don't think that's a concern. Embiid is playing an MVP season and the Eastern Conference is up for the taking. If there's ever a time to make a push it's now.
The way look at it, until the trade, we did not have a playmaking point guard and now we have an elite one. Maxey is a great player but he is mostly makes plays for himself. We went from Simmons who was retired from the team to Harden. You have to give up something to get a player like Harden, so Curry and Drummond were the most expendable on the list of players in which the Nets wanted.
As a fellow sixers fan, I loved the trade. You gotta remember those draft picks have some protections on them (at least the second first rounder, the first one may actually have been unprotected). I wasn't really following the Nets too much this year, but one thing I'm wondering is how productive Millsap will be? I remember he was a solid player in Denver recently and very good in Atlanta early in his career. Would be great for him to catch a third wind in Philly for the playoffs
I know we gave up two first rounders but I do not know what protected and unprotected means. I also do not know much about Millsap, other than he is a pretty big dude from a weight perspective.
The initial tweet I saw said the first 1st round pick is unprotected, meaning the Nets get the 6ers pick no matter where it is in the order. Then the second 1st rounder is top 15 protected, meaning if the 6ers draft position in that year is in the top 15, the 6ers keep the pick and the Nets get the 6ers pick the following year. I actually think I saw it's still protected in the second year but only top 5 protected
Big sixers fan, and I'll miss Seth and Drumdog (best backup Embiid has had for sure), but I'm very happy with the trade. It's win-now time with Embiid playing out of his mind.
Add another MONSTER stat line for Embiid tonight. Beating the Bucks without Harden. This may be the year 😮💨
It is hard to stop a big guy who can shoot 3s and drive through anyone. I think what is most remarkable about him is how his basketball IQ is off the charts high! The dude knows how to get to the line. Last night, he was bringing the ball up the court more than Maxey, haha
Lifetime Nets fan, and honestly I think the Nets came out on top. They got some picks back the lost, brought in an All-NBA defender, a true PG for home games and a force off the bench on away games, and a large presence in the frontcourt for rebounding and scoring. At full strength and no injuries, they'll be able to play the free-flowing offense the wanted while spreading the floor quite well offensively. They do still lack depth, though.
This isn't to say the Sixers got shafted at all, they still made out well, too. Just think the Nets were able to plug more holes up. Also just generally more annoyed the Nets got rid of a Top 10 center and a very talented SG in the process.
Sorry to hear that. On paper the Nets did okay with the trade but lets be real about Ben: he is a point guard who can't shoot. Name one elite point guard who can't shoot? The closest person I can think of is Westbrook...Need I say more. Also, the Nets now have Ben and Kyrie: what could possibly go wrong?
I hear you, and we will see what Nash does, but that's the thing, the Nets don't need another scorer... when healthy, they are still able to spread the floor. They can play the flowing offense they wanted vs. Harden's Iso ball. Durant, Harris, Curry, Aldridge, Thomas, Mills, Irving, Drummond, Claxton can all score. Also remember the Kyrie willingly gave up PG so Harden could run 1 (but will 100% say he's a bit of a nut, I wanted Kyrie for Ben and kept Allen and LeVert). This rotation can still average a lot of points, but they needed to get better on the boards and defensively, which this accomplished.
As for being a Nets fan its been a long ride lol.
The Nets have lots of talent BUT is that talent reliable? The other thing I would point out here is having Simmons and Drummond on the floor at the same time could be a foul shooting nightmare. They both shoot close to 50%! If you put one of them on the line, the probability of them getting 2 consecutive free throws is like 25%!. That is a substantial liability. It will be interesting for both teams going forward. Regardless of who gets out of the East, it is going to be difficult to beat the Warriors or Suns.
yeah itll depend on the lineups, nash does like to play small ball at some times, but it is a liability - at least durant is a lanky 6 10 lol. We'll see how it goes but I agree with you on the last point, no way the east is winning it
Great win for the Nets last night, thanks to Kyrie. We have to go one game at a time but Sixers fans as so pumped about having a point guard like Harden. It is only one game, but going from no play maker to an elite one, makes a big difference. Tbh, I had not watched Harden all that much prior to his first game. His ball handling ability and passing ability are terrific. The players are no longer standing around waiting for Embiid to score.
Its funny, because like you i didn't watch and wasn't sure about Harden when he came either, and he was just a magician. Made everyone around him better, and I'm sure you saw how much more the sixers were able to spread the floor. That game made a good statement regardless if it was the T-Wolves. I'm sure philly is going to accommodate the style of play he wants, and Embiid is probably ecstatic hes not double teamed anymore
Appreciate the words on the Nets, statement win as well with an very shorthanded roster. Drummond showing how valuable he can be. When this team is at full strength, and now actually showing some tenacity defensively, the current seeding means nothing in the east
Neither nets or 76ers fan. I think 76ers won the trade, but both teams got better. The two first round picks mean nothing. One of them is this year, which is worthless. The other pick I think is 2027 but it's top 8 protected. Maybe if shit hits the fan then that could be costly, but let's assume embiid still bringing it. The way I look at it, simmons was never gonna play another game for the 76ers because of his mEnTaL hEaLth. Btw not bashing mental health at all it's def a serious issue but I doubt that's the reason simmons refused to play. The first round picks are mostly worthless as I mentioned.
So what it comes down to is the 76ers got james harden and gave up seth curry and drummond. I would give up those two for james harden every time. Yes, james harden isn't the same beast that he was in the rockets, especially with that 2018 team with chris paul where they almost beat the warriors. He hasn't been the same since his hamstring injury, and he's no longer getting the foul calls on the pump fake. Yes, his shooting has been abysmal this season, and he tends to choke in the playoffs and play little defense. However, he's still an elite scorer and playmaker that can get you 23 pts, 8 rebounds, and 10 assists a night this season. People always be like harden chokes. What the fuck do you think simmons was doing against the hawks last playoffs? Dude completely shuts down and is too afraid to even drive. He has no mid range game or jumper whatsoever and has never made any improvements to his game. At least harden can make free throws. Every team down the stretch goes hack a simmons and he inevitably bricks free throws. He shot 33% from the free throw line against the hawks in the ECS. 33 fucking %.
James harden and embiid will be elite in the pick and roll. James harden gives embiid another scorer who can take the burden off him when he's being double or triple teamed. Tobias harris cannot be your #2 option if you want to contend for a chip. Embiid looks exhausted continuously carrying his team offensively night in and night out. He's playing like an MVP and could use more help. Look at him against the bucks last night. Great performance by him but he look fucking drained. I think the 76ers are the 3rd favorite to win the east. I put them behind the bucks at 1 and heat at 2. Nets are just going to struggle with chemistry having so little games left and kyrie not being able to play most of them. If Kyrie is allowed to play home games, then they will definitely be a top contender. However, they're staring down a 7 or 8 seed.
Don't get me wrong. Seth curry is an elite shooter. Drummond can get you lots of rebounds (can be replaced in buyout market though). Neither plays good defense though, which is what brooklyn is lacking. Simmons is an elite defender, but what do you do in crunch time when teams resort to hacking him? If you take him out for his offensive liability, then you lose his defensive potential. I think Simmons is overrated as a passer, as most of his plays come off the fast break.
Either way, this is proving to be for a very exciting playoffs. The league has gotten a lot more competitive over the last 5-6 years, and it's no longer a lock for it to be cavs warriors or something like that. Should be lots of good basketball ahead
Yeah, he basically retired from the Sixers after a bad playoff series. It is going to very interesting to see Harden's impact on the Sixers. I just hope he realizes Embiid is the star and focal point. I am sure he gets it, though, based on how he played for the Nets.
Ben is teamed up with Kyrie. On paper, it looks good but yikes: what about their personalities?
His defense obviously helps the nets, but I'm not sure it's a seamless fit. Ben likes to have the ball in his hands and play PG often. Kyrie is also ball dominant as well. KD can play off ball and shoot wherever, so that's no issue. Simmons lacks mental toughness. Sure, everybody chokes here and there, but his offensive meltdowns are the worst I've seen of any top caliber player. I don't get why he still hasn't suited up for a game yet for the Nets. Will be interesting to see how he plays. He doesn't have a growth oriented mindset. Other players like lonzo and giannis work hard to improve their weaknesses in the offseason to reduce their liabilities. Simmons just stays the same every season. Still has no jump shot. Still can't shoot free throws. Still has no mid range game. He's good at driving, but if he sees a couple misses, he completely backs off. It's tough to get better with his attitude. He's obviously a top defensive talent, but his offense leaves much to be desired.
