Solo travel during spring break

I definitely want to go somewhere warm for spring break sometime in March. I'm thinking someplace in the carribbean. However, there's a good chance that I won't be able to find any friends to go with.

Any recommendations for places I can go to alone? Obviously there are some resorts that are geared towards couples while a place like cabo is for large groups of people.

I've heard Jamaica is more chill for the solo traveler. I think they also have singles resorts there. Maybe check one of those out.

If you look into Jamaica, check out one of the Hedonism resorts. There are a few and they are for single people and swinging couples looking to hook up. Could be fun...

Or if you don't go to Hedonism, at least pull up 'Hedo Rick' on YouTube.

He can't go to Hedonism...he won't have a good time..why, you ask?

I'd bring a prostitute or something to one of the hedonist resorts. Single girls don't go to those things and if you don't have something to trade with the swingers you'll end up being the third wheel in some sort of middle aged love triangle.

Hi; Try checking out a company called SoloMate Travel, www.solomatetravel.com for singles and solo travelers. Good luck.

What are you hoping to do? Relax on the beach? Party at the pool? Looking for a place wih clubs / huge bars? Do you like to go on excursions / explore? All inclusive or indifferent? Do you like to scuba/snorkel? Large resort or "high end" boutique? What's your budget?

Personally, I'm looking at Turks & Caicos for my next trip.

Funny that you brought up turks&caicos because a friend actually recommended going there. He went solo back in 2008 and has a fucking blast. Lot of outdoor stuff to do, like jetskiing, scuba diving, tons of places to just go and chill.

Are you looking to party or for quiet or a mix of both?

Quiet time Id suggest British Virgin Islands.

Party/quiet mix I'd suggest US Virgin Islands/Aruba. Go for it man, I'm jealous.

Probably a mix. I mean I live in Chicago, which is brutally cold until May, so going somewhere warm in March and relaxing will be great. At the same time I still want to go out, drink, and meet young people, even if i'm going solo.

I will look into aruba and virgin islands. I almost went to virgin last year, but plans fell through.

I have done a lot of solo traveling (backpacking) the past few years and have found it to be an outstanding experience. A lot of friends and family will think you are crazy for going off somewhere on your own, but sometimes it's the best option when your friends either don't have the time or the money to take a trip at the same time.

There are a lot of benefits. You can wake up every day whenever you feel like it, eat what you want, do what you want and not have to worry about anyone else. It also allows you to meet more people. You're more approachable when you're alone and also more motivated to reach out to others.

My best advice would not be to go to a Caribbean island or another type of "sit and hangout type of location resort location." You're not going to have fun sitting around by the pool all day, that gets boring/lonely after about a day or two. I have found that the best place to go and meet people is somewhere that has foreigners/tourists (obviously), but not so many that it isn't rare. If you go to Cancun, then it is going to be all Americans on Spring Break that are there with their entire frat/sorority. It's like walking down the street of their own college town. Americans are everywhere so why would they go out of their way to talk to you? They also have all of their friends there, no need to make new ones unless you are an attractive member of the opposite sex. Going somewhere with enough foreigners to give you the opportunity to meet some, but not so many that it is common is the way to go.

Your best bet is to go to a backpacker haven and stay in nice party hostels. They are just as much fun as your classic college spring break trip, but a little different. A lot of young, long term travelers stay in them and it is extremely easy to meet people in the hostel rooms, common room and bar area. These sorts of places have lots of day trips that you can do which will be fun and also allow you to meet a bunch of people to hang out with.

Without knowing your budget or location, the best places off the top of my head would be Panama, Costa Rica, Peru, Argentina, SE Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos), Eastern Europe, amongst others. Try Googling around for backpacker hot spots and also try Lonely Planet. If you're looking at SE Asia (my first choice) then go to Travelfish.org.

In terms of finding a hostel, go to hostelworld.com and they will rank hostels. Find a young, social place that looks half way decent. Message me if you have any questions.
