Sports Commentators/Analysts Suck
It is ridiculous how bad sports commentators and analysts (Stephen A. Smith, Max Kellerman, Shannon Sharpe, Skip Bayless, etc.) now are these days. They don't even try to dissect the game. I get that their entire purpose now is to entertain and drive clicks, but they offer no insight into the game. Sports analysis is the only job where being bad at what you are paid to do is good. It's ridiculous.
My favorite Sports commenter is Joe Stapleton. He is hilarious. If he wasn't commenting on most of the poker content, it would be super dull (yes poker is a sport...) 😎
That’s because your not really differentiating real sports commentators from entertainers. Real sports commentators to me will be guys like Tim Leglar, Sarah Kustak(think that’s how you spell her name, and then NFL guys like James Jones etc like basically guys that really cover and know the game and don’t say shit for clicks!
I think ESPN has generally been shifting away from analytics and towards entertainment for a while. Steven A and Max are popular because they're loud, argue with each other, and occasionally swear or say the N-word on national television. As someone who grew up watching ESPN and still watches it every day, it does bum me out that this is the route they have been taking in the past decade or so. Being able to say that some amazing play was good or digging for any possible way to shit on Brady does not constitute hard hitting intellectual commentary imo. I've gotten into a few of the guys doing this on youtube, namely Jomboy for baseball and UrinatingTree for football. They put out quality, easy to watch content and actually have a great understanding on the game. Happy to plug them here.
Strong Opinion Sports is a gd treasure for NFL commentary. The does great film analysis too
The main gripe I have about sports commentators is that many of the local ones are homers. They are incredibly biased towards the home team, especially in baseball. I sometimes have to mute games when I am watching the Mets play the Nationals or Phillies or Braves.
I like Stephen A because he is funny. I have enjoyed his critique of Kyrie, which has basically been, the dude is being paid millions of dollars, so get on the fucking court and play basketball. I do not like his counterpart all that much.
Not to be a downer, but I believe that any sort of television news is beyond saving. I cannot think of one major TV station that offers unbiased or genuine analytical commentary. That being said, some sites like The Athletic, PFF, and even some of the written pieces on ESPN or Sports Illustrated can offer good insight. I personally do not like podcasts but I know many analysts have them so if you find certain people you like you could check them out on Spotify
