Suicide = Autophagy of Humanity?
Been thinking about ants and bees lately. Scientists recently changed the classification of an ant colony to a single organism. Despite not being physically connected, they decided they're connected enough chemically and who knows how else that it's a single organism. Kinda like how you might see a series of mushroom patches, but it's all one mycelium in the earth with fruiting bodies spread out. Each ant has a role. Each fruiting body has a role.
Cell:Human as Human:Humanity
Autophagy is the process of programmed cell death. The cells in your body each have a role. If the greater organism determines a cell is senescent, it should receive instructions to self-destruct to protect the larger organism and it will do so given the right circumstances (read: lack of perpetual gluttony).
Been thinking about suicide a lot lately too. Reading some Kay Redfield Jamison. Rates are spiking like crazy in the Western world. Everyone knows why in their hearts of hearts but nobody's willing to change how they live.
Sick society > Lack of community > Lack of meaningful struggle and exertion > Lack of long-form communication > Social isolation > Perpetual feeling of rejection > Lack of feeling of belonging and purpose to the greater organism
If you cut off a leg, it doesn't walk away.
ur brain diff.
Yeah, there are some theories out there that humans committing suicide is possibly an evolutionary mechanism that helps the well-being of our species. It's similar to how bees sting other animals, thereby killing themselves, in order to protect their hive. The bee probably doesn't think "I need to sacrifice myself to protect the other bees," but instead kills itself instinctually because this is ingrained in its behavior. While some humans may sacrifice themselves believing they are doing good for their community, like kamikaze pilots or suicide bombers, others may not be thinking they are being altruistic. They may kill themselves feeling they are alone and isolated, but in reality, the ultimate reason could be that they are easing the burden on our society (not that I believe this is right). Suicidal behavior is typical in social animals, like bees, dolphins, and ants, which you mentioned. Humans are highly social, so being able to adjust and integrate with human society is imperative for our survival as a species. It makes sense that maybe maladjusted people ending their lives is similar to how a cell programs its own death to save the organism.
