Tattoo on wrist - turnoff?

I want to get a tattoo on my wrist. A small pink blue butterfly, about 2cm x 2cm, to signify my metamorphosis. Yes I am retarded like that in that I need things to symbolise changes. I don’t think it should be a problem as a trader to have a small feminine tattoo? I will try and attach some pics. Are tattoos on women a turn off for guys? If you see a girl with any kind of tattoo do you automatically assume she is a leftist lesbian or a freak because I have heard this....

thanks I appreciate your honesty cos that is exactly why I posted . I had a chuckle too cos at first glance read your red flag as red SLAG which is probably another stereotype of tattooed girls. hahaha. I am 99% not going through with it

pretty weak fold - where is the physical symbol of the metamorphisis?

"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." - Bruce Lee

The butterfly emerges from the caterpillars cocoon metamorphosised. So the butterfly symbolises metamorphic change (and anti fragility) but technically yes, the actual metamorphosis is in the cocoon. yeah I’m not getting a cocoon tattooed on my wrist to prove a freakin philosophy.

no, I mean you folded on getting the butterfly - how will you have a tangible symbol of the metamorphosis (the butterfly tattoo)

"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." - Bruce Lee

metamorphosis a beautiful concept esp in the context of anti fragility but the butterfly really is really basic symbol as many have pointed out. Maybe a small black swan instead IF I do in fact get a tattoo done... Last year I was going to get candlesticks done and then my friend goes that it would look to the average civilian like I had dynamite sticks done! haha yea I have odd taste =]

Funniest

your ability to answer questions appropriately is really pissing me off

Why do YOU feel the need to get a black swan tattoo?

btw - I think tattoos are hot

but spend the extra $$$ to get a well known artist to give you a piece of art rather than just some random ink

What worries me the most is that something that was supposedly important to you got quickly shut down by the opinion of an anonymous internet user.

Thus I don't think you should get the tattoo. Some jackass might make a prickly comment about it and seeing how easily you can get dissuaded, will spin you into a hole of insecurity.

Don't worry as you grow older you will hopefully learn to not care what other people think about you, which is somewhat normal as a college student

For starters, I don't think a small wrist tattoo is a huge deal in the first place, especially a feminine one on a woman.

In general though, if you're in a pure performance based field like Prop Trading and you have the performance to back it up, getting a tattoo is cool as fuck and actually kind of hot.

Because your job is performance-based, getting something that is conventionally "inadvisable career advice" is a great way to signal publicly that you are more valuable to the firm than stupid convention. It also doesn't work in domains where you specifically have to serve a master, like Banking or Consulting, and so little signifiers like that are an excellent way to signal "fuck off, I'm free" - at least in some small capacity, relative to the others.

Super relevant/related discourse: See Taleb's thoughts on cursing:

Risk takers can be socially unpredictable people. Freedom is always associated with risk taking, whether it led to it or came from it. You take risks, you feel part of history. And risk takers take risks because it is in their nature to be wild animals.

Note the linguistic dimension –and why, in addition to sartorial considerations, traders needed to be put away from the rest of nonfree, nonrisktaking people. My days, nobody cursed in public except for gang members and those who wanted to signal that they were not slaves: traders cursed like sailors and I have kept the habit of strategic foul language, used only outside of my writings and family life. Those who use foul language on social networks (such as Twitter) are sending an expensive signal that they are free –and, ironically, competent. You don’t signal competence if you don’t take risks for it –there are few such low risk strategies. So cursing today is a status symbol, just as oligarchs in Moscow wear blue jeans at special events to signal their power. Even in banks, traders were shown to customers on tours of the firm as you would with animals in a zoo and the site of a trader cursing on a phone while in a shouting match with a broker is something that was part of the scenery.

So while cursing and bad language can be a sign of dog-like status and total ignorance –the “canaille” which etymologically relates these people to dogs; ironically the highest status, that of free-man, is usually indicated by voluntarily adopting the mores of the lowest class. Consider that the English “manners” isn’t something that applies to the aristocracy; it is a middle class thing and the entire manners of the English are meant for the domestication of those who need to be domesticated.

This is such a fucking great answer! All my heroes are rebel, risk-taking spirits like Steve Jobs and Maria Callas & I Literally yesterday finished reading the Incerto series (another monkey recommended it on my quarantine reading list post). This tattoo possibility is in fact inspired by Taleb work. He is fucking Genius and the butterfly to me symbolises the caterpillar’s most profound metamorphosis into butterfly aka Anti-fragility.

Do your thing girl. Just remember that the not insignificant price of the "fuck off" attitude in general is that you have to continuously back it up with performance. Best of luck out there.

2) you'll be a mediocre trader at best

I don't think there are a ton of mediocre traders out there. Some people have what it takes - some people don't. You're either a trader or something else.

If you get THIS tattoo, then yes, I will think you're a leftist lesbian or some basic Becky who got an unthought out tattoo. You really need a pink blue butterfly to signify change? Do you live in CHAZ by chance? I think you could find a better tattoo to represent change other than a fucking butterfly on your wrist.

op what if youre still actually a caterpillar and what if actually the journey never ends what if this is the case pls draft up some symbolism i suggest an infinity symbol incorporated into the word "Love" as a push-off point

If you want to get a tattoo and that's a turnoff for some guys, then are those the guys that would would actually want to date? Honestly, live your life however you want and guys will be attracted to that. I've dated girls with tattoos and without tattoos; it was never a factor in the decision.

As far as work goes, you kind of have to read the room on the culture of the firm. I work at a firm that likely wouldn't care but it depends on the place.

I mean, I think it depends on the tattoo. The girls i've dated with tattoos had some small ones on their feet and one girl had some on her ribs but nothing egregious. However, I know a girl that has some massive back tattoos and it looks trashy, no way would I ever date a girl like that.

In my opinion, a small tattoo isn't going to limit someones dating options.

Bill Murray once said "Whenever people ask me why I don't have any tattoos I say to them, "Would you put a bumper sticker on a Ferrari?" "

What is causing this almost lemming-like trend of women getting tattoos these days? Almost every girl I have met in the last five years has at least one tattoo, and it's usually a: butterfly, flowers, birds or an anchor. Most of them at least have them in places that they can easily hide/cover. Most guys won't say this publicly, but think girls with tattoos are "fun for now" but not the kind of girl you bring home to mom.

Just be smart and think about how you will come across in a job interview. Tattoos are like a permanent haircut, you don't really know how it will look until it's actually completed. At the end of the day it's your body and you should do whatever you want.

Tattoos in my mind = slutiness. So I would fool around with you, but something serious would be low probability. Other would likely agree. Nothing against you personally, of course. But generally speaking, highly educated and classy women do not get tattoos, and neither do men, so no double standard.

My MD once said regarding tattoos, “would you put bumper stickers on a Bentley”?

Wrist isn’t a big deal. Butterfly is pretty basic but whatev, if it means something to you and it’s just your wrist do what makes you happy, guys aren’t going to care.

Tramp stamps and skank flanks signal a lot more. Also, finger and neck tattoos are popular among the girls I ‘dated’ but wouldn’t bring home to mom.

Controversial

I will probably get bombarded with MS but tattoos, in my opinion, signify internal issues. I have never met a psychologically sound woman with a tattoo let alone has considered getting one. Any person, male or female, who has permanently branded themselves reeks of impulsivity and lack of foresight/ long term thinking and self awareness.

You only see tattoos more often nowadays because once unattainable experiences and environments are now commodities and people nowadays are unrefined in general but tattoos were once confined to dive bars, Walmarts and swimming holes.

That sounds anecdotal.

Sure, some tattoos are tasteless; but people express themselves in different ways. Tattoos don’t automatically signal a lack of self-awareness or impulsivity — many tattoos are well-thought-out and individually meaningful.

I would suggest that the guy characterizing people with tattoos as ‘unrefined’ and regulars at the local dive bar/Walmart is the one with internal issues.

Think of it like this, having tattoos can rub some people the wrong way, fair or not, right or wrong.

But no one will judge you for NOT having tattoos. From my own experience, I went to an Ivy, and less than 1% of students/faculty had tattoos. In all of my years of working on Wall Street, have seen very few people on the client side with tats. Haven’t seen any lawyers with them, probably because they wear suits without exception. A few co-workers have small tats here and there, although they aren’t flashy, and to notice, you really have to pay attention. The maintenance guy at my office building has one, come to think of it. Wouldn’t be surprised if some people consider it a mistake now. All in all, it stands out when someone I know professionally has a tattoo, because it’s still not the norm.

Obviously, your body, your choice, but it would also be your consequences to deal with. And you probably won’t even know when people judge you for it, whether in a professional, social, or personal setting.

EDIT: I still think you should do whatever you want irresepective of how others will think of it. But as the person posting below, asking if guys will find it attractive or not - I have never found them attractive per se, but also not particularly un-attractive either. It's like 60-40 in the negative

2) Irrespective of what anyone else thinks though, of that tattoo or any other modification, please be mindful that a tattoo is permanent, and what might seem like it expresses you now, may not be a suitable expression of yourself in a few years' / decades' time. I regret getting that Nickleback tattoo on my face, I really do.

lol wtf, the girl legit asked this forum what they thought about it and how guys would react... You'd think it's a normal thing to care about when you potentially write yourself off to like 30-60% of guys who will point blank never date (bring home to parents type of date- long term) a girl with a tattoo because of a myriad of social reasons including family, professionalism, long-term views, implied values, etc.

Nobody is questioning whether she has free autonomy to make decisions- all the power to her there, BUT it's perfectly reasonable for her to ask how the opposite sex feels when she- ya know- permanently alters her body for an emotion whether its a permanent or fleeting one.

If I were to alter my body I would like to know the honest opinions of the opposite sex as well.... Especially if it can't be undone (without burning or ruining your skin in the process)...

ok so I said pre-NYC I would never date a girl with a tattoo and that quickly changed in the city. Then that changed to no visible tattoos and that quickly changed again (wrist, heel, small on the finger). They’re not a turn-on for me but if kept small / black ink / sparse even visible they’ve become more of like an opt-in birthmark in my eyes. I would personally never get one, but I’m not like repulsed.

some have mentioned the banking / consulting vs prop culture and I think that’s probably right. In the former I only knew people with either the small black ones (and I mean small and thin not like a thick cross on the forearm) or ones in color that were highly invisible (I knew someone with a full back one, and a fucking baller vet VP at an EB who had a full sleeve that ended at exactly the point where he’d roll up his dress shirt; only realized he had it on the weekends in casual wear). Prop may let you “get away” with color, but if you want to start black / an outline that may be the play if you want to dip your toe in the water.

Also, echoing what everyone else said about performance, especially given the sexism around women showing their emotions in finance. Unfortunately if you god forbid show anger or sadness ever, shitty men may try to peg you as “crazy” anyway and use the ink as part of the narrative. It’s just wrong but that’s a whole nother discussion.

I love tattoos, ink on chicks can be VERY hot, but if you get a tattoo on your wrist, neck, face, ankle, or foot, I assume you have poor judgment because even in the most dressed up situation (pant suit with long sleeve oxford) all of those tats could potentially show.

consider your shoulderblade, upper spine (where your cervical ends and thoracic begins), or any location which can be easily covered up. I'm not saying you should be ashamed of your tats, what I am saying is you should realize that some people look at tats negatively, and while I don't think they should, that's the world we live in. you can choose where it goes, so choose wisely.

This is on point. I dated a girl with tattoos on her ribs and it was pretty hot, but she could cover those up easily (someone would have to see her naked to even know they existed). But it's poor judgement to get tattoos in some places. I once knew a girl with tattoos on her knuckles; can't imagine that helped with job interviews.

most girls at my university seem to have a tattoo, and I personally find them very attractive. I'm planning on getting some ink work done somewhere I can easily cover it up (I also live in a more liberal part of Canada so that might make a difference)

Why the wrist? Is it so that it’s an easy visible reminder for yourself? If I were to get some symbolic ink, I’d probably put it in a less visible place just so I don’t have to worry about needing to cover it up for when the occasion calls for it.

I personally really like tattoo art (just not on me cause I can’t think of something symbolic or meaningful I want inked permanently, and I’d probably get sick of it in a year or two).

If you decide to get ink, make sure you splurge for a good artist.

Do not know a single person who does not regret having a tattoo once they hit 30.

Are you trying to say once they hit 30, they regret their tattoo?

Honestly I'm not opposed to the idea of getting a small tattoo if I were to have some image worth tattooing in the future, but the issue for me is how it looks after a few years... sure it can look pretty sharp initially but every old tattoo seems to look disgusting and faded. I know touch ups are a thing but still doesn't seem that appealing overall.

I did an internship in S&T and I have two sleeves, one of which extends to pretty much the upper half of my hand/very bottom of my wrist (I'm in the process of getting it removed). No one said anything about the my tats, if they noticed. There was also a female director there with a small religious symbol on her wrist and she wore short sleeves sometimes so you could notice it, and as far as I'm aware everyone was cool with it.

However, I have since pivoted to PE and am now in a client facing role and wish I had never gotten some many fucking tats when I was a dumb teenager( 14 when I got my first one btw). But my tats are also ghetto looking and filled with skulls, so maybe a small meaningful tat is different

In conclusion do whatever you want, but realize that you may regret it in the long run!

It's not but what pussy lets the law get in the way of a good time amiright

I got the first few from a friend of a friend who tattooed out of his basement. Then I went to a pretty hood tattoo shop, but that had good artists when I was 16 and I just lied and said I was 18 but since I already had tats, was confident with the money to pay whatever the price, reeked of weed and alcohol, and look very old for my age(deep black bags around my eyes and early facial hair) no one cared so I went wild
