Texas will bus illegal immigrants to DC, Abbott says

Abbott making moves. In my opinion he should set up a transport station to welcome folks in, give them tents + rations, and put them directly on a bus. If DC wants to let everyone else in so bad, let them have them. It'll be LA 2 electric boogaloo in no time.

Makes no sense why the US loves illegal immigrants but basically kicks out US-educated folks with degrees & potentially solid earnings/tax revenue...

I've always been a staunch supporter of folks like STEM and business grads being able to receive a green card or at least get a better shot at one after finishing university here. Totally agree with you. Letting in masses of unvetted, poor, and uneducated populations who will be another expense of resources funded by our shrinking labor force just makes it worse for the unskilled labor/service jobs and makes raising the minimum wage that much more of a fantasy.

Yeah I lost someone on a F visa a bit ago to this and it was really depressing.

Playing devil's advocate: the immigrant groups who have the most degrees and earn the most money also tend to be highly left-wing. Asians are a heavily left-wing voting bloc. Indian-Americans are the single highest-earning demographic in the US and vote in supermajorities for the Democrat party. So bringing in the people you describe means, in practice, bringing in more Democrat voters.

You may support that, of course. But put yourself in the shoes of a conservative evangelical Christian Texan. Why exactly should he want more people in his state who will vote 70%+ against the things he believes in? It makes no sense.

Low skilled foreign born workers are more likely to depress the wages of other low skilled foreign born workers rather than low skilled native workers. The US economy actually relies on these people to do tons of work that Americans won’t do. First it’s lazy Zillenials not wanting to work that’s the problem and now its immigrants taking all the jobs. Sheesh pick one dog-whistle talking point and stick with it. *Side note yes of course the US needs to do better by educated immigrants who come here legally

Funniest

very based of texas to do this.

I would send them individually to all the brownstones in the UWS and Park Slope with "In this house we believe black lives matter, no human is illegal " signs etc.  They shouldn't have any issues taking them in right?

Actually, Park Slope was one of the few neighborhoods that supported de Blasio's upzoning plans a few years back.  In other words, they actually put their money where their mouth was, so it's ironic you hold them up as examples of hypocrites

There is quite a labor shortage at the moment at the lowest level jobs. Many of the portfolio companies at my fund are struggling to find quality low level work and it is eating up their margins. It’s just not at my fund but it is a problem at most funds right now. In my opinion, immigrants with a lack of education are more willing to do the low level work and are generally more driven people. Many Americans today are very entitled (good times create weak people). Adding a group of determined, hard working, and humble people to the population will at the very least help fix the labor shortage and can even help give perspective to the entitled in this country. Just my 2 cents.

See this is the type of content that makes me upset. Most of America’s great cities of the past are desperately looking for low level work in non-technical fields and a return to their former greatness. Detroit, Baltimore, Cleveland, St. Louis, Troy/Flint, Gary, the list goes on. Open up a factory or office there and you’ll have hundreds of applicants within a week  looking for a job and meaning in life. But once the spotlight shines on these cities of the past the disgusting truth about how Corporate America outsourced out tremendous amounts of wealth will come to light, something the establishment must keep hidden from the public eye as long as possible. Throw on to that ever present racism (as most of these cities have a majority African American population) of wishing to keep poor African Americans in a perpetual welfare state, and you have a distorted situation where the establishment seeks to increase the number of poor struggling people in the country rather than working on improving QOL (through real advancement not welfare) for the poor who already are legally in the US.

For heavens sake.....cry me a river.   Boo hoo my private equity fund thats notorious for cost cutting/layoffs and being cheap AF can't find people to work for portcos at the LOWEST POSSIBLE WAGE we can possibly trick someone into taking(in order to improve margins), while I sit back and earn nearly 1mm a year in tax beneficial carry.

We need more humble immigrants to work these "low level" jobs!   (translation: we need more people to continue to work near minimum wage jobs so my portcos can boost their margins and cashflow and we can flip it for a nice return in 3-5 years).

you are a parasite,  srs.

This is on point. Most illegal immigrants contribute to our productivity. As you mentioned, there are many Americans that don’t want to do the low-level jobs. That’s a fact. Look at all of these vacant jobs in the current market.

Abbott is a neocon establishment GOP. The only reason he’ll last another term is because he’s up against “take away your AR-47” Beto.

$1Bn worth of unused material in the construction of the border wall still exists as the project was ceased once Trump left office. Abbott can easily get this material through eminent domain and make good strides on the wall, but he won’t because he’s gaining money and power through some back door deals from the ensuing chaos and disorder in the same way Bush Jr. did with the Middle East conflicts.

Lol.  "Awful failure of a developer fails to build wall" is basically an Onion headline, despite being true in this case

Such an epic state. Did you see NYC is having local companies spend a bunch of money to put up signs that say gay all over the state to try and attract people back? Utter clowns.

Abbott is so based. Offer massive tax breaks for tech companies to relocate so hundreds of thousands of California liberals can move to Texas and multiply the housing pricing for locals by 2-4x, then bitch about liberals voting the same way they did in california

wow so based bro

Before everyone gets so moist they slide off their seats and looks as foolhardy as Drumpfy can get, a couple of things to point out: 1) this program is entirely voluntary on part of the immigrants after they are processed by customs and border protection, 2) it's an election year in Texas and this is obviously just for pandering purposes, 3) notice how there's no talk of sending them back to their country of origin and continue to funnel them further within our own country instead.

To wit, Abbott has the powers, budget and had the clout to do far more with the southern border the entire time but just now dances this out to flirt with voters.

Yeah, the more I've read about this the less I'm impressed sadly. I also saw DeSantis say the same thing but for shipping them to Delaware. Oh well.

Haha. I'm pretty middle of the road moderate liberal (former GOP voter before it turned into a cult), which of course makes me a Bernie socialist on WSO these days. Republicans have no interest in actually solving the "issue" either, or else they'd crack down hard on employers violating the e-verify system. They want to ensure a steady flow of cheap labor for their corporate donors, and scare the MAGA rubes about the scary brown people to keep them voting to slash their own social safety net with every Republican vote they cast.

Both sides use immigrants as political pawns to be honest; only the GOP demonizes them. I get you guys don't give a shit - when I was 22 I only cared about myself too. They're people who weren't born on third base like half of WSO and want a better life for their families than the cards they were dealt - just like me and you.

"I don't know how to explain to you that you should care about other people."

Lmao, "prioritize its own citizens".

The right tried to make rural, low income people pay five figures more in healthcare.  They refuse to lower insulin prices and want Americans to pay multiples of what people in other developing countries pay (no, Trump's executive order that he never even implemented and only would have affected a very small percentage of Americans doesn't count).  Almost all the debt in this country was created by them cutting Soros's and other billionaires' taxes but they won't cut the gas tax.

It's kind of like how the right talks about mental health after every mass shooting.  Until you realize they voted to defund that too.   It's just a distraction.

Or, you know... make it easier to immigrate legally?  It's racist because the right wing's obsession with "illegals" has nothing to do with their status as illegals and everything to do with the color of their skin.

You never hear anyone complain about Europeans overstaying their visas.  Because they're white.  You never hear a reasonable discussion on a pathway to citizenship for illegals, because that would mean humanizing darker skinned folks.

When the complaints are only about people with dark skin, it's racist, no matter how you try and contort your own internal logic.

Abbott is doing something immigrant rights activists have wanted for a while: providing free transportation to their final destination if they want.  It is fully optional too and only for immigrants who are having their asylum being processed.

But hey!  He has to provide some red meat to the MAGAs in between all those tax cuts for glorious job creators like Soros!  And judging by this thread it is working well!

Ozymandia

Pretty much sums up modern conservatism - whatever is good, take.  Whatever is bad, offload to a liberal.

This is literally the story of federal taxation by state and ROI. The "net takers" are overwhelmingly red states, and blue states on average pay more in federal taxes than they receive back from the government. I'd love to see that leveled out..

Yep.  I mean, most of the Mountain West has historically been little more than a federal colony.  Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas... these aren't viable political entities so much as the anachronistic welfare queens of the industrial revolution.

"Net takers" are disproportionately minorities, i.e. Democrat voters. Red states have a ton of them. On a person by person basis Republicans contribute more and a greater percentage of Democrats have negative tax liabilities.

This is like when liberals point out crime or poverty issues in the deep south. GEE I WONDER WHAT DRIVES THAT.

The left is SO frustrating to support because of their inability to enact effective policy that actually helps people, but the right just straight up doesn't' have a platform at all. Their whole "platform" is whatever the left wants to do, try to poke as many holes in it as possible and talk about how it will "ruin the country." I don't understand how people can support a party that obviously has no interest in helping less fortunate members of our country. It's truly appalling.

I had a friend growing up whose parents were undocumented. Dad worked two jobs and mom worked one to put him through school.

These are incredibly hard working people who just want a better life for their family than was available in their home country.

Personally I get the argument against illegal immigration I just think that on the list of "issues with our country" they are at or near the bottom. Population growth is slow, we have a labor shortage, and these people are filling jobs that entitled Americans won't take. At the very least, some people on here need to step down from their ivory towers and have some fucking empathy.

I hate wokeism as much as the next guy but why is illegal immigration the rallying cry for conservatives when it is such a minor issue.

It’s not a minor issue. The only reason it hasn’t historically been a major disruption of society is because both parties sort of had some control of the border and would deport some people. Now that the far left has completely taken over the party, we are talking 2, 3, 4 million border crossers in a single year during the 4 years of the Biden administration. The Biden administration then drops these people in red states and Dem groups sue when Republican governors try to take steps to prevent this. The Democrats are playing the long game—they know that they will net millions of votes with these policies, which will throw federal control to them. At the local level, they let illegals vote, cementing their political control. All the while, violent crime and drugs cross over the border as crime and drug overdoses surge. Illegals crowd public schools, hospitals, and DMVs, costing the taxpayer. And the most insulting and evil aspect of this all is that the Dems simply refuse to deport criminals.

This is the single biggest issue of our day. The Dems murder 1 million babies each year and this is their method for replacing the murdered voters in the next generation.

The term undocumented is so cringe. It's illegal alien(you are illegally in the country).  You aren't "undocumented". Undocumented would refer to the fact you are here legally but simply have no record of it.  THATS NOT TRUE.

Democrats used to say that word all the time until the whole party had a collective lobotomy on social issues around 2011.
