There are a bunch of schools you could add to that third tier. Off the top of my head, Indiana, Illinois, and UF have some good IB programs that should probably be included

I mean, I think most public schools deserve some respect, at least for a few of their programs. Due to having huge student bases, a lot of them have a good amount of money to dump into schools.
Indiana has some great programs, U of Washington has a some great programs, ASU actually has surprisingly good business and law schools too.
would rather hire someone with a 3.5 gpa from a state/party school than a 4.0 from an ivy/target, thats just me though i know most would think differently
Same. Not to become FratLord but I put preference to people with great gpas who were in fraternities/ sororities at a large state school. The social skills and time management abilities are just leagues above, I do a lot of the hiring for interns at my company, and have not once been let down by someone that fit those metrics.
As someone that went to a state/party school, this is bullshit. There is some great talent to be found, but its not among the 3.5GPA frat stars
Agreed but I HATE the few frat douches that think they are god's gift to earth.
South Carolina has been very solid recently too. Their Finance Scholars program has places ~20 students a year into a bunch of different firms / locations. Definitely send the most to Charlotte but some also go to NYC, SF, CHI, ATL, etc.
They recently started a new program called the Freshman Finance Academy that has been a big success. The first class has kids going to EVR, JPM, MS, LAZ, WB, etc. They definitely seem to be moving in the right direction.

Having had a lot of friends that went there, Greek Life sucks at Georgia. Higher admission standards mean more brainy kids getting in and the FAF kids ending up at less selective schools.

Mays is pretty reputable, especially in Texas (obviously). They have a pretty extensive network that is pretty strong (nationwide). I saw they have some good programs for banking/PE, specifically a program which takes you to NYC to network. I think a big supporter of the program is Britt Harris, who had a small stint at CEO of Bridgewater and now runs the Texas Retirement Fund.
I think if you are looking to move to NYC and do banking, prob not ideal but doable. Mays and McCoombs should easily land you a banking gig in Texas - especially in energy.

Quite a bit. A&M appears to me to be one of the most underrated universities in the nation. There's a lot of alumni in surprisingly influential positions. They've got a good business school, and thanks to the Corps of Cadets a lot of alumni highly placed in government.
CEO of Exxon, EOG Resources, Humana, CIGNA, Phillips 66, and Marathon Oil are all A&M grads. Saudi Oil Minister and US Secretary of Energy are also A&M grads. They're definitely well represented in the O&G space.
For finance / business (mostly in order):
Berkeley / Michigan UVA UT Austin / UNC / UCLA (econ) Indiana
In general (somewhat in order):
Tier I: Berkeley, Michigan, UVA*, UCLA Tier II: UNC, UT Austin, Illinois, Wisconsin, GA, Tech**, Washington, etc..
*for business and law **for STEM
Also keep in mind it can very by topic. If you want a quant job, then GA Tech is a great place to be. If you're there for IBD I hope that SunTrust is one of your favorite firms.

With a few exceptions, such as West Virginia University or Louisville, all state universities in the "Power 5" athletic conferences--Big XII, Big Ten, ACC, SEC, Pac-12--are relatively well respected across academic disciplines, which is how they got into the Power 5 conferences in the first place.
This thread got bumped and I saw this old comment. Since then, my new boss, who makes a ridiculous amount of money, is a West Virginia grad. Serves me right for being a dick about it.

Once you get past UT Austin I would argue its all the same b/c you're well outside of target status and at that point, up to you to hit it
The status of UT, in reality, is absurdly un-earned. Schools like UNC and UT-Austin are super easy to get into in-state, unlike, say, UVa, which is still very difficult to get into in-state. UT has a completely un-earned "Wall Street" reputation.
lol wtf are you talking about un-earned? UT has a top law school, med school, engr school, business school etc. It is simply one of the most well rounded institutions in this country. The top 10% (now 8%?) rule is what makes it relatively easy to get into but that has nothing to do with quality of education and employment outcomes. It also doesn't get you into McCombs or the school of engineering.

UC Berkeley is the #1 public school in the world. UVA and Mich aren't far behind.
Wrong. Upenn is #1 and is the state flagship school just like Univ of Florida and Univeristy of Texas for their respective states. It's sister school penn state is also good but has similar problems to the Catholic Church.
I hate to point this out, but UPenn is a private school. That inherently takes it out of the discussion, ergo UPenn cannot be the #1 Public School. For it to even be considered a State School in the State of Pennsylvania, let alone a Flagship school, it would need to be a public university under Pennsylvania's PSSHE or the PA CSHE designation, be considered a Land Grand school (which it's clearly not) under the Morrill Acts of 1862 and 1890, and be involved in Division I athletics. If we want to get really picky here, the Division I ranking should be FBS schools, but since the NCAA designation under the but they do play in the DI FCS, which broadly counts. UPenn is not designated as a PSSHE or a PA CSHE school and is not a Land Grand institution under the Morrill Acts.
To make it broader, and therefore easier to prove me wrong, we can use James J. F. Forest and Kevin Kinser's definition from Higher Education in the United States: An Encyclopedia. They define a flagship school as "The flagship university is the most visible, best-funded and most prestigious public institution in the state." The key word there is public, which would remove UPenn from the discussion. Seeing as it's not, that disqualified UPenn from any such "Public School" rankings. If you can prove that UPenn is a PA CSHE or PSSHE designated public school, I'll gladly rescind my comment, but good luck with that.
