You won't be needing a tux unless you plan on going to a bunch of weddings.

i'd say you need at least 4 different tuxes - one traditional/black (for when you're hobnobbing with titans of industry), one modern (when ur with the other analyst buddies getting your models and bottles on), one powder blue (for your MD's/VPs kids' bar mitzvahs), one backup. and of course some of them can interchangeable for various events.
you'll be attending more of these than you think in your first year.
You forgot a suede one for when you are pimping hoes on the side. Although quick tip for all you savers out there, kill two birds with a suede powder blue tux.
Don't listen to these guys, you don't need a tuxedo. But you do need several tuxedo t shirts, in fact you should probably wear one to work your first day, its considered quite formal/stylish

The cummerbund is CRUCIAL.

What type of asshole graduates from college not owning a tux?
the only time when it makes sense to buy a tux instead of rent it is when you enter college and you plan on joining a frat. you'll use it at least once a year for formals and maybe more.
You may get invited to black tie functions as an analyst but you'll probably have too much work to attend.

Word is that as some of the banks move back to business formal, a few might over reach and go straight to black tie around the office. Might make a good inpression to show up in a tux on your first day. Let all the folks in your office know that you are a serious guy.

Since graduating, I wear black-tie at least four times a year, Firm Christmas Party, New Year Eve, a charity event I go to, and one or two trips to dinners that require it.

thinking of getting a tux but not sure. been going to a lot of black tie events (3 this year) and have a few more coming up. Seems black tie is coming back. Anyone have any thoughts on buying a tux? Renting is getting expensive and the quality sucks. Feel like a butler half the time even if you rent the really nice ones.

Buy from Men's Wearhouse. You can get a really nice one for about $300 or less, and they'll tailor it for you. Renting is a huge ripoff.
A custom MTM will cost you in the $600-$700 range. Like usual, I recommend nitafashions.com but everybody has their own favorite HK-based tailor.
Rented tuxes are horrible. I hate how the pants have an adjustable waist from 30 to 40 inches. Even if James Bond had a 40 inch (or 101.6 cm since he's British) waist, his tux pants would at least be fitted.
There's this guy in HK that used to do Brioni's production line but I can't recall his name, they say his MTM/Bespoke is really good and at HK prices still. Do you know who he is?

I bought a tux and its growing moss in my closet. Honestly it's not something I recommend. You'll get such limited use out of it, those black tie events that we all attend rapidly lose their luster after a year or two ($100 ticket black tie bullshit event someplace) and nobody wants to go anymore because people hate renting. Sure, you'll have a new tux and be pumped to go a few times but IMO tuxes are a wasted investment. Styles change and you just don't get enough use out of a tux to justify buying one. Just my $0.02 anyway.

But no, tuxes are not "coming back". The black tie circuit for recent grads has existed for decades and it's the same year after year.
Last time I checked, tuxes are one of the few articles of men's clothing that really haven't changed much since it was invented. Buy a tux, you will wear it a lot. College friends will start getting married, you'll have dinners to go to, etc. and believe me you won't want to have to deal with going out and renting one every time.
Plus, rentals can be somewhat expensive and look like shit.

Wow, good job WSO, I'm glad the level of sarcastic asshole tomfoolery seems to have declined. I was almost certain the first three comments would suggest getting a Tuxedo T-Shirt (because it says I want to be formal, but I'm here to party).
Just by a nice black suit. More versatile and you can probably get away with wearing it as long as you get a white, french cuff shirt vs the tuxedo type shirt.
