Voluntary work for 3-6 months recommended?

I just left my TAS Big 4 gig, and I'm thinking about doing something "non-traditional" in the next 3-6 months, i.e. temporary positions in US Embassy, Red Cross, Teach for X Country, unpaid UN internships in Africa etc.

The reasons for that are:
- My parents, devout Buddhists, have been telling me lately that I should do more charity work
- I didn't have spectacular ECs during college -> this negatively impacts my grad school/MBA applications
- I interviewed recently at World Bank and got dinged, they asked me about examples of development work and I couldn't provide
- I'm not entirely concerned about money at the moment
- I'm taking the time to prep for MFin/other master's apps in 2020, GRE, math prerequisites, essays etc.

However, I'm not sure if future employers will grill me on that, e.g. why did you leave your job to do charity work?
